Shadow of the frikking Beast. Great looks, great sounds.
Guys, guys, seriously - is there a harder game than this in existence?

Shadow of the Beast II is indeed one of the hardest game ever created. However it is possible to finish it without cheats. A friend of mine did it and posted it on YouTube too.

Goddamn, that game looks amazing. Like 32-bit era good. Man, I loved my Amiga.

This is a thoroughly wonderful thread and I've had a great time reading through your comments.
Couple of additions:
* Grim Fandango still looks sweet and is a very enjoyable playthrough which I completed recently.
* The Broken Sword 1/2 games. While they did use drawn backgrounds you cannot deny they look damn good these days.
Oh and thanks for the suggestion of Unreal. I dug out my copy and just spent a solid 40min playing the opening sequence. Fantastic game; they don't make intro's like that anymore...

- The Last Express
- Another World
- Fallout
- SlipStream 5000

- Diablo, maybe Postal?
- Descent

No no no.
I completed Shadow of the Beast II (it has an
awesome Game Over screen and weeping guitar). Its actually pretty short.
I'm talking the original Shadow of the Beast (I never played 3). That game was so, so hard it was unreal. I don't think it's meant to be completed or even progressed through. I played it lots, watched it played lots. The farthest I ever saw was after you get the blue fireball/lightning attack and you meet the 1st boss. W.T.F. Seriously. I forgive it for it's beauty but you couldn't even save! Infrikkingsane.

Doom

I am still impressed with Thief 1's graphics WITH the ddfix/32-bit renderer. The dark moody environments still draw me in. For a wile, I had to play with the dithering, and it detracted from my enjoyment of the game.

Unreal 1. This games not only looks good, but
sounds good and plays good. Too bad Epic embarked on pop-style looking Tournaments after this.
Yeah, Unreal had the most beautiful sky I've ever seen in a game. If you ghost around the maps, you can sort of see how it was made with multiple layers of clouds.
