No Jules et Jim, demagogue? *dismisses an otherwise great list outright for one oversight*

I was just about to edit in (1) with my own biases of course; (2) out of what I actually figured out on my own. I wasn't a film studies major or anything, so I just picked up things from review sites or articles or just something that struck me as 'I have to see this'; & (3) what I was actually able to find... I'd love to learn more must-sees, and that just got on the list. :)

Seriously: I like Truffaut in general and love Jules et Jim. Another nouvelle vague film I'm happy to recommend is Louis Malle's Ascenseur pour l'échafaud, with a great Miles Davis soundtrack. There are people who would recommend Goddard's A Bout de Souffle, which I'll have to rewatch at some point, but I get the impression that there are Truffaut people and Goddard people and I'm very much the former.

P.S.: Das Boot is '80s, not '70s. I remember when it was first shown on TV (the original miniseries, not the edited-down movie), although I didn't watch all of it at the time. Gosh, I was six... Eep.

Oh, I've seen the Jerk! I am a huge Steve Martin fan, I've seen most of his works. Also, I've seen most of Charlton Heston's classics while I was growing up, and I must say he did a damn fine job.

Breakfast at Tiffany's is on my watch list for tomorrow.

These foreign films - are they dubbed or can they be purchased dubbed? Thanks so much for the wonderful suggestions, I'm so excited to see so many movies I've not seen yet!

To expand on dema's great list, here's some recs for the bigger directors.

Kurosawa: Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Ran, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Stray Dog, High & Low

Bergman: The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Fanny & Alexander, Persona, Through a Glass Darkly

Fellini: La Dolce Vita, Nights of Cabiria, La Strada, Armacord, 8 1/2 (the order is probably quite important here - I wouldn't recommend jumping into 8 1/2 until you have a few Fellini films under your belt)

Tarkovsky: Ivan's Childhood, Solaris, Andrei Rublev, Stalker, The Mirror (rough order here too)

@Caradavin: I think most fans of classic films in languages other than English will tell you to go for subtitles rather than dubs; you can get good dubs, but even there you lose so much of the original acting. It's not just film/language snobbery. If you want to appreciate foreign films fully, give subtitles a fair chance.

The problem I always found with dubs is that they usually aren't overseen by the original director so a great deal of the tone is lost.

In my experience, the people who are not willing to read subtitles are the kind of people who will not appreciate classic foreign movies anyway.
