Good idea, but is X-Com good for half an hour here, half an hour there?

If we`re sticking with snes then SHADOWRUN. Great snes game. But if you want to stick with platformers then Super Castlevania IV & Super Metroid would be my first two picks. Other than that Earthworm Jim or any of the megaman games.

How about some suggestions that don't involve out-right piracy? The 2nd paragraph of Volitions Advocate's post has like been the only one.

Totally, missions are pretty self-contained.

You can acquire Genesis games legally on Steam now, and they're mostly great games.

(
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranarama) Ranarama.
Hadn't thought of it in ages, but it is awesome. More frantic that gauntlet, and with crazy rune word rearrangement puzzles. Sounds weird but it's great.
I can vouch for both the Amstrad CPC and Atari ST versions. The Speccy one's probably a bit shit ;)

All the X-Com games are on Steam, and those that require it come pre-configured with Dosbox. Just install like any other Steam game, which takes all of thirty seconds since the original X-Com is about 20mb, and just double click to play.

For Sega Genesis there is Fusion, or Gens if you want Genesis & Sega CD games.
(
http://www.eidolons-inn.net/tiki-index.php?page=Kega) Kega Fusion does indeed support Sega CD. It also supports Master System games, and is cross-platform.
Suffice to say, it's my Genesis emulator of choice.
In any case, rather than posting a massive list of games, I will just point you to my game collection and recommend anything with a four or five star rating ;)
(
http://games.zerker.ca/Library/page26.html) SNES and (
http://games.zerker.ca/Library/page22.html) Genesis.
I will give specific (and somewhat arbetrary) recommendations:
For SNES:
Umihara Kawase is a fun grappling-hook platform game.
Tetris Attack is a great puzzle game (later known as Puzzle League).
Legend of the Mystical Ninja (aka Goemon) is a fun action/adventure game, especially with a friend.
For Genesis:
Toe Jam & Earl is quirky and fun. Somewhat roguelike, in a weird way.
Bubble & Squeak is a cute light puzzle/platformer.
Musha is a great vertical-scrolling shooter.
And Ranger-X is a great side-scrolling shooter/platformer.
Of the ones I listed, I would say that Tetris Attack, Toe Jam & Earl and Musha would be fairly playable with a keyboard. The rest have platforming elements, so they are less suitable.

Don't bother with any Sonic game that isn't 1 or CD.

And failing that, play Ristar. Hope I'm not alone in thinking it deserved more attention.

Gunstar Heroes for Genesis.
