Oldblivion for aged video cards... - by huitcat

Okay, I got it working pretty well so far! I started a new game and I'm still in the first dungeon, so I can't comment on outdoors/trees/water/etc yet.
I have:
Pentium M 1.4ghz
512meg RAM (probably average speed)
GeForce FX Go5650 w/128meg RAM
I had previously tried installing and playing Oblivion on it with very little success - the game technically ran, but it was all but impossible to actually play. With Oldblivion running, however, I get smooth completely playable framerates! It looks a lot worse, of course, but if I never had seen the "real" game I would say (with Oldblivion) it's a great looking game in general.
I first tried the v0.10 and it just didn't work well - everything was all screwy and seethough and flashy and liney and crazy and insane and invisible, etc etc etc. Then I tried v0.11t0 and it suddenly was a ton better, but the lighting was flickering a lot, same with v0.11t1, but v0.11t2 solves the flickering.
There are still some minor glitches that I've noticed (very far away objects seeming to switch from fogged to unfogged, or something like that, hard to tell). There are probably a lot more bugs when I get outside (their website and forums mention various known issues and some workarounds to try).
But so far I would say that this is a GREAT program and I highly recommend/endorse it :thumb:

i'm thinking about running this on my geforce 7800gs just so i can get more playable framerates in larger battles in 3rd person mode

I'm stuck with a sorry 512MB RAM, so no such luck.
I tried oldblivion and it ran Oblivion better than usual. I did experience some irritating, but not too bad, graphics errors so I switched back to normal.

right now it's so new that there are some bugs, plus you can tweak it a lot to make things better and get rid of specific errors. Hopefully in newer versions it will fix a lot of those issues so that little or no tweaking is necessary

Does it tweak the shimmer effect around conjured things and oblivion gates? (e.g. when you summon a scamp or use a bound item theres some sort of red disk-like shimmer around it, like a slight shimmer that hovers around a radius of the gates) because thats the only thing that screws my framerate up.

Yeah, that effect causes problems for me too. Not framerate problems, but some pretty serious graphical fuzz-ifying all round the screen. It only lasts a few seconds normally, particularly at Oblivion Gates, and disappears when I move closer, but it's still an annoying bug that I'd like fixed. Here's hoping someone has an answer...

If your game is working and playable the normal way then you would definitely not want to use Oldblivion. It will seriously reduce your graphics quality and wouldn't be worth it. It's more geared for people and computers who just plain couldn't run Oblivion normally, like my laptop, or people with a Geforce 4 Ti4400 or whatever.

Really this program is great, I couldn't find a way to run it on my computer with the normal version of oblivion but now it works. I have a geforce 5600 128 mb and 512mb memory+an athlon 2700XP well it works for sure.
But If your pc is running fast on the normal settings of oldblivion try to put renderpasses in the oldblivion.cfg (in you oldblivion folder) file to 15 this makes everything look a bit better if you ask me.

Of course the beta patch now includes official support for older cards so you don't have to bother with this.
I installed Oblivion on my girlfriend's computer with a Geforce 5500 and the game runs really smoothly, though does indeed look like crap (no lighting whatsoever). But it runs and that's all she cares about... :D

That patch is RETARDED (at least the "support old cards" aspect of it). If you knew what was going on, you would fully agree
There are certain lighting passes done in Oblivion - things like specular, but not just that. The ultra low settings available in the patch simply turns them all off, making the game look like UTTER CRAPOLA. Sure it runs smooth, but it's not worth it. Just run Oldblivion and the game looks pretty darn good! There are still some issues with Oldblivion though (minor bugs here and there, some slightly major bugs, nothing dangerous), so it's not perfect, but it's loads better than the retarted patch solution. Plus you can have distant land/buildings/trees, which makes a huge difference in immersion.
You should have your girlfriend try Oldblivion. It's SUPER simple - it just sits in a separate folder and you run it and it automatically starts regular Oblivion. Select something like normal settings with medium or high texture quality, and you'll see a WORLD of difference, and it will still run butter smooth
