I'd assumed it was a result of the electroshock treatments as well.
I finished The Cradle with something like one percent more than the minimum amount of loot required. I knew where a bunch of the remaining stuff was, but there was no way I was going to go back for it.
LOL!
When I was replaying TDS, it was even more scary (don't know why) so my playing paused for a long while before The Cradle - I just didn't want to go through again, and I didn't have the next savegame to skip it and go on another mission :)

IMO they move like zombies and that does it. In my imagination, all reanimated zombies would move like that rather than those at Abysmal Gale
The
shamblers are supposed to
run? Think again.

But fans actually like to think deeply about their favourite games, movies, paintings, music... That's ART. ;)
Whether or not it is ART is slightly irrelevant. What I was talking about is a tendancy (you see this a lot in music like tool and the mars volta) for fans to pick on small details and try and figure out what "they are about", or "what the meaning is". Sometimes you have to just go with it, forget about trying to decipher every little detail and enjoy the general ambience.
I think this definately applies to the cradle in some ways. Whilst it is fun to find all the clues and back story to the cradle, the truth is there probably is no real meaning to it all. Just like in the first thief games there was a massive amount of meaningless notes that just provided colour, the cradle (I think) is just a situation that was meant to scare the hell out of you, provide a bit of mystery, and take bloody ages to complete. The concept behind all the ambiguity is that it adds to the fear. Your imagination should have been running rife whilst you played through this level, and that probably made it a hell of a lot scarier.
Sure, comment how creepy the patients were, and how well designed the level was, but don't go into this deep an meaningful interpretations of what really happened... You'll be mostly wasting your time.

People enjoy things in different ways. Some people have fun trying to interpret things they enjoy in an attempt to find out how and why they're effective, or in an attempt to understand the creators' thought processes. We're an inquisitive species, it's only natural.
You aren't the author, so it's specious at best to claim that this or that detail is meaningless and that everyone should stop having fun trying to puzzle things out for themselves. If you aren't the intellectually curious type that's fine, but adopting a false sense of authority and berating people for thinking about things too much isn't exactly productive.

Fair enough.
But really, is it any more specious to claim that there is no deeper meaning, than to claim that there is? Look at the bow upgrade, or even the bigfoot rumours in GTA San Andreas.
Whilst I realise that my argument excludes pretty much all others, one could argue that this does not make it any less valid. But then we get into the self-serving arguments that seem popular in forums like these.
But I might point out that firstly, I don't see this sort of speculation as particularily productive, or fruitful in this case. And secondly I'm really not that much of a pessimist, I really love having a bit of mystery about a game, look at the g-man. Great stuff! I just really get sick of some people who pull things way out of context and try and wrap them into odd conspiracy theories. I realise that this is not the case hered, and I apologise if I came across a bit strong. But just have a look at some San Andreas forums to see what I mean.

I don't see any point lecturing people not to think about things around them, the less in a thread which doesn't interest me at all.
Are you bored?
Cradle is serious stuff and according to it's designer, it's based on more serious and real stuff. This level is particularly intellectually stimulating (in framework of it's own genre) and it has quite unique position in the history of gaming. No sorry.

Well I am bored, but that's not why I do this really. I just enjoy discussion, which is the general gist of a forum, eh?
