Yeah the title is not very informative, but I assure you the real one is even worse.
It's (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_the_Rain-slick_Precipice_of_Darkness) that game from Penny Arcade guys. You can get the demo and whatnot, which is quite short for it's size but hey, it's shareware so that's how it is.
The game itself plays very much like a jRPG, with running around and ATB and whatnot, though there's quite a lot more to do than normal - you can dodge and perform special attacks with spacebar, that combined with several characters on the battlefield gets quite action-ish.
The biggest problem is the humour. Penny Arcade is quite standard webcomic which means they're
sometimes funny, and the game is based on a single concept of their funnyness which might not be amusing to all. What the hell am I talking about. Long story short: If you think Fruit Fucker-type humour is childish and or/pathetic and/or lame, you won't like it.

I thought this was pretty awesome. Brings back memories of Monkey Island.

I was going to buy it, but I bought Apocalypse Now instead.

The real title is "On The Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness" and perfectly, though verbosely, describes the premise of the game. Considering how one of PA's schticks is that Tycho is excessively overwrought re: words, I think it's pretty appropriate, considering it's a game that's for PA fans.
Which leads into my review! The gameplay is fun enough, I quite liked the combat. It really boils down to "Do you like Penny-Arcade?" if you answer yes, then this game is a worthwhile buy, if you answer no, seriously, why are you even CONSIDERING the Penny-Arcade game?

The problem is that there are varying degrees of "like".

What Shakey said. Sometimes I think PA is very funny; sometimes I think it is infantile and humorless. My main problem is that the enormous ego of the creators sometimes overpowers the comic.
That said, I heart Ron Gilbert, so this is probably the best we're gonna get till Deathspank comes out.

It should cost a penny.
what?

It's built like a jRPG which means I have no interest. That gameplay style is not my cup of tea.
june gloom on 25/5/2008 at 20:44
It can't be that bad. If anything it can't be any worse than Anachronox' combat.
Try the demo at least before judging.

it has ron gilbert, it has cartoon style and it's for WINDOWS AND LINUX !!!!
I need to support that. I only read Penny Arcade once or twice and thought it's a school kid's project supported by their mom's. well, seems they got fans and money so lucky us get to play a new indie adventure game. makes me more excited than any new GOW2: this time I admit I love him
