Actually, he is quite right that this would be what he'd have to do:
Quote:
A Republican Nevada state assemblyman said that he would vote for legislation in favor of slavery if his constituents wanted him to.
(
http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2013/oct/28/state-senator-says-hed-vote-slavery-if-his-constit/) Story
As repugnant as the idea may be, proper representation under a Republic form of government would dictate that he voted in favor of slavery, if that is what his constituents desired. He is their "representative", elected to "represent" their wishes and wants--not his own.
Thoughts?

Or he could resign.

Sounds like someone's trying to make a point in the most hyperbolic, retarded, sensationalist way possible.

I have a question. Do you have to look very hard to find these peculiarities in your country? On the whole, we only have Prince Philip who regularly, disastrously, opens his mouth to put his foot in it.
Could he abstain?

That brings up an interesting thought, why run for election if you're not willing to accurately and fully represent the wishes of those who elected you? That is his role, is it not?
Otherwise, he'd be doing what everyone bitches about—governing for his own gain and not the will of the people. Or governing unfairly.

If you find out the people who voted you in are nuts you've every right to call it off, just like if you find out your wife is actually a Christian zombie vampire.

He really didn't put his foot in his mouth, though, when what he is stating is correct. Unlike Prince Philip who could say he's all for taxing lepers and flogging serfs just because that's what he wants government to do, this guy would be fulfilling the wishes of his electorate.

Isn't it more "the people vote someone in who's own views best reflect their own"? You're not electing a mouthpiece for your own crazy, you're electing the best individual representation of your collective compromise-crazy.
In which case, if you're the elected guy and you're not pro-slavery, finding out that your voters inexplicably want them some sweet sweet slavemeat, I'd say you'd be entirely within your remit to either vote with your conscience or resign. It's just that this situation is unlikely to ever occur (see above).

How the hell could you fend off a Christian vampire? .... crucifix wouldn't work.
