According to the following news item, OnLive is an on-demand gaming service that will host games on a cloud, removing the need for customers to follow the usual hardware upgrade path as all of the intensive operations will be run on their servers.

I've often wondered why this sort of thing hasn't been actively promoted before. In fact, I have had my suspicions for some time that Google might be entertaining the idea of doing something similar, accessible through their thing client OS to be released later this year.

the service went live in the USA yesterday, has been in beta for a year and atm nobody can still say what the latency is gonna be. The developers claim not > 80ms which is still not enough and you need 1.5mbps for the SD resolution. it's been years of hype for the service, we'll see how it holds up out in the open. I reserve judgement when they break the 1mio customers AT THE SAME TIME, not just subscriptions. next year is europe, if this really works, I'll kiss my high-end pc goodbye.

Not so sure, most gamers have payed a good pc or console for a reason, and most people want to touch what they own. What new market is really there, if it's a success it will be very slow.

I'm the type that doesn't buy games very often, but I spend hours up on hours playing them. Surely, I've spent over 100 hours on 2fort in half-life over the years. I can justify paying $20 for a game every 4 months, rather than paying $15 per month just to stay current with the latest games. For the most part, the new games don't interest me anyway. I just want Thief 4 and Deus Ex 3 if they are good games.

Wait, some asshole ported 2fort to Half-Life?

Notice too that the $15 fee is just so you're awarded the right to log in to the service, rentals and buys cost extra.
I personally have a deep hatred of everything taking control, property and rights away from me, so I hope they fail miserably.

I assume s/he meant TFC... or were you being sarcastic?

I want to have the game files, savegames etc. stored on my hard drive and make use of my own PC's resources to do all the number crunching.
I am optimistic that this will end up as an epic fail, so I will not worry too much (for the time being at least).

Man, I hate this awesome service that lets me play high end games on a low end laptop because I have a proverbial stick up my ass over anything remotely resembling DRM! I HOPE THEY DIE SO HARD! GRARWWWRRWR
Now admittedly, if it does eventually supplant the default way we play our games, I'll be gnashing my teeth and wailing in despair alongside the best of you gloom and doom naysayers. But for the time being at least, I'm finding myself pretty thrilled by the concept.
