While testing in NewDark 1.21 problems were encountered with some .wav files producing a loud hiss instead of the correct sound. This only happened if Options > Hardware Acceleration was set to OpenAL. The sounds were fine in all other settings.
The files at fault were all Wave 24 bit stereo. The hiss disappeared and the sounds played normally in OpenAL if the files were changed to Wave 16 bit stereo, signed.
Moral - keep your .wavs down to 16 bits or less.
