I don't know programming, but from the sounds of it, things are lookin' good.
In terms of the naming, I like Zaccheus' idea, though maybe shorten the third one to simple OpenDarkPy.dll

Volca, I think I've asked this before, but now things seem to be progressing a bit more, so I was wondering, when do you foresee us simple folk using OPDE to run Thief?

Currently you can load any T1, T2 or SS2 levels in OPDE and cruise through it in a "no clip" mode. But it is still a long way to go to make it run Thief like Dark Engine does.
The installer is almost ready for beta testing, if you are interested I can send it to you to try.

Hmmmm, well I have a powerful setup (GTX280, E8400, 4Gb DDR2_1066, RAID, XFI, etc) so I would be interested to see how it runs..

That's a beast you have there (Do you feed it with car batteries? :D)
I get around 200-400 FPS in most cases (and not less than 50 FPS) on 8800GTS / 4200+ athlon 64. I'm interested what results will the machine of yours give.

My P4 D at work has two video cards, one an onboard Intel 128MB crap, and an Asus 8500GT 512MB crap. On the Intel card OPDE runs at 8FPS (!), and on the Asus at around 160FPS.
PM me with your email address and I will send the installer to you.

Who is the current owner of the DarkEngine's code?
Was there a petition tried to GPL it?
There's never going to be a commercial retail game using dark engine, so I cannot see how it would hurt any publisher...
Volca on 26/10/2008 at 15:47
As I always say - I don't think that Dark Engine's source is easily accessible for anyone - Eidos should *probably* have a copy, somewhere, but also EA own rights for SS2 (does that include Dark Engine license? I wonder). This alone means, I suppose, that GPLing such thing is unlikely.
There is a petition, but to this day it was unsuccessful.
A few people reported they're trying to contact someone in Eidos to query for such possibility. No success.

Regardless, I would think that the Thief and SS2 forks would probably fall under separate licenses.
I know that the scripts for OPDE are being done in Python for portability's sake, but most people have x86 Windows boxes. Could OPDE use a binding to initially just drop in the OSMs and then, later, use a different binding for Python scripts?
The thing here is that switching the scripts over to Python is a serious change in the game architecture, and means that stuff like AI will be different whether we like it or not- and it might well take so long to get all the fine-tuned stuff right that everyone will have lost interest before it's finished.
If I could code it, I would- but I think that an interface for the OSMs would be a huge step forward in getting some basic playability and public interest in the project. In my opinion, portability can come way later.
