I'm sorry to say I get less and less time to concentrate on this so please be patient, not much really happened in the last 2-3 months (I started to work on PHYS_SYSTEM handling - reading/writing).
I guess it could be a good time to search for people that want to help but this is always a problem - it takes time to realize/coordinate, can be fruitless, and newcomers tend to generate rush for a while while learning what to do and how, and then leave before becoming productive.
Hmm, this project really needs a kick in the back to become successful and not die, we have yet to pass the line where it's mass will attract people on it's own :erg:

Gather a few people who are willing to scout out some programmers, then. I'm too busy to do so, but I think there's a few people here who wouldn't mind helping you find some programmers.

Say, have you thought of making a rough demo that shows runthroughs of the engine? I mean, the demo you released is great and all, but ironically, most of the talented individuals who would be capable of working on OPDE, seem to be unaware of the games it'll be for, and have no way of using the current version of OPDE released because of such.
But then, maybe I'm just a bit worried the project has taken a turn for the slower.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean - the released version is capable of such you mention. You mean a video or such to show how it looks?
Yeah, it really is slowed down just now, I barely find time and energy to touch the source code. The problem is I still am the single force behind the project (I don't mean no one contributed by saying this, I just mean that if I didn't continue, the project would quite likely stop with my effort). I'll most likely return to work on this soon, I'm not saying I'm giving up just yet. It would be a pity to stop the effort now when we're few months of hard work from some basic simulation code.

Maybe it would help the project, if you tell the people, why you are building a new engine if an old one exists .
-What are the advantages of OPDE?
-Is it possible to compile it on Linux? (dark project is sometimes a bit buggy with wine)
Furthermore, I think it's a good idea to upload a video on youtube, to show what ODPE looks like. :p

The Dark engine is close source and the source code is thought to have been lost anyway. Dark is having more and more difficulties running on newer hardware, and can only run on the PC.
The advantages of OPDE would be that it would be possible to run Dark Engine games working properly on newer hardware, natively for different OSes, and improve the graphics of the game by taking advantage of newer rendering technologies.
I think the real problem with getting more people working on this project, is most people that are capable of doing this sort of thing aren't motivated to reverse engineer something as complicated as an old game engine, unless they really love the game. It's a huge commitment and undertaking, and I most certainly appreciate and applaud the efforts of Volca and others that have been working on it. Sadly, this thing called "real life" tends to cut down on the time they have to work on this...dark...project... but I have faith it will get finished.

Can I compile it on Linux?
Albert on 7/5/2010 at 22:18
Now, this what I'm talking about, good optimism with good, unblinded intentions. (I'm not even religious, so the former sentence sounds a bit corny to me.)
And of course, OPDE will get completed someday. It's not a total loss like much of the community believes.
Albert on 7/5/2010 at 22:29
Oh, and Volca, what I meant was that you need more than just a downloadable demo that requires the game resources. You need to create a neat video demonstration of what OPDE is capable of, up to this point.
(Or something or other...)

Maybe you could do it for him Albert?
