It's still my dream to see (in any shape or form) Thief Gold and 2 in a modern engine with modernized geometry. A 100% faithful remake, I guess. DDFix is fine and good for the classic feel, though optimized as much as possible, but still everything is too square as was the norm in that era. Now games are of course way more advanced, so my dream come true would be the same Thief game and experience, but remade in a modern style.

Hi Volca, is this project still ongoing..?
Volca on 20/4/2012 at 14:03
At this point nope. I just don't have the time to work on it any more. :(

Of course, I think we're pretty much all thinking this. I just don't see this happening though. Feel free to prove me wrong community!:ebil:

It has a installer, it loads any map (OM, FM), it has a very simple input system that lets you move around the camera, and a console that allows you to enter a few commands.
All the objects and AI get loaded but the AI remain in the crucifix position. There is no collision with the terrain/objects, so the movement is like the "no clip" mode.
Unfortunately I don't have time to work on it anymore either. I was working on adding a physics engine when I had to stop. It is a great project but the amount of work necessary is huge.

My dream is similar, but I don't care as much about things being "too square." Fan Missions and custom models have already improved on that a lot. What I really want to see is ridiculously huge environments with interesting terrain, long view distances, lots of npcs, etc. and the same old Thief gameplay. I'm ok with mostly baked-in lighting. I want important changes enacted by the player to be persistent (for example, bodies stay where you put them, and guards don't respawn). I don't want separate loading zones for interiors or anything like that. I want an editor that makes it easy to create awesome-looking FMs, with the addition of robust terrain editing tools in particular (let the creator zip around yanking up hills, pushing down valleys, tossing in water, sprinkling trees and painting rocks, dirt, and grass so they have a complete landscape after a few hours of work, then they can get to work on buildings and all the other details).
Edit: sorry if I'm getting off-topic here. I was just inspired to reply to what poroshin said.

Easiest solution for you dreams:
Download The Dark Mod
Install Dark Radiant
Do your own rebuild in the Doom 3 engine of a classic map :)
Melan on 2/5/2012 at 12:56
Unfortunately, that is not legally possible. You could theoretically rebuild the Thief levels even with all the engine differences, but distributing them, or packaging Thief-specific assets into a mission archive would be a large no-no.
So, although I wish a lot more people started with DarkRadiant (it is user-friendly, powerful, and very simple to learn its basics), I would not suggest anyone to rebuild original Thief missions with it. Or, for that matter, any other toolset.

Besides...
1. Komag already built a lot of the OMs in Darkmod.
2. The levels aren't really made in the way the engine likes, and they don't take advantage of the engine either (Dromed's limit is around 1000 polys whereas Darkmod of course can push 100,000s of polys in a scene).
3. What would be awesome IMO though is if somebody made "inspired by" homage Darkmod missions, where it took one of the classic OMs and put a new twist on them with some surprises, and no Thief IP of course.
