After finding the logs I read them through and there are a few places where inappropriate comments are made but considering the age of those making the comments and the gravity of the events unfolding it is not surprising. I guess I was the oldest in that irc room and I really thought as I read through, how controlled the conversation was. One or two idiots joined and left but that is generally accepted in irc. The moderators kept a lid on on it and at one point there were 32 nicks in the room, a lot for the thief room.
The only reason I feel I should share these logs is because it is the ttlg forums. Other places I frequent do not have the same sense of place, age or antecedent. This is not meant to be an opportunity to mock or flame those who were there on the day just a chance to look back at a dreadful day and watch it unfold for eight hours in a chat room with people from many different countries, different points of view sharing grief and worries of the future. I should not be the only keeper.

I voted for 'share with all who want a copy'. I will qualify that by saying that if you do go with that option, then perhaps those who do want a copy should be restricted to those who are 'well known' or were involved in that conversation.

I'd say just the latter. In fact, I'd re-frame the entire poll to just include those who were involved in the conversation.
If the majority of those involved don't want others seeing the logs, then I say go with that. If the majority are ok with a limited selection of others (say people who were TTLGers at the time), then go with that. Etc...

I remember Paz apologising for his contributions early on; unleash the Pig I say

actually I retract my earlier comments, Medlar has informed me that I am not in these logs, as I would have joined a lot later on due to time zones and me being out until after the 2nd tower went down, so my concerns are baseless.
I have a lot of painful memories from that time due to other circumstances as well, I just didnt want to dredge them up.

There was a good article a few years back about how future historians are going to have a hard time piecing together public thoughts in the late 20th compared to earlier. As people moved away from writing letters and essays and so forth and leaving chests full of them when they died it gets thin. There's no great archive of phone calls to trawl through (not that that's a bad thing). Then they move over to a fractious internet who used to trash all emails after a few months. Messaging systems go down, harddrives crash, companies grow and die by the thousands. Sure there's some pack rat out there with the usenet since 1970 backed up. But it's not terribly reliable and it barely scratches the surface. (I remember lots of interesting conversations on the Ion Storm forums. Hardly momentous history, but people doing popular histories might like that sort of thing one day).
This idea that The Internet Never Forgets only really covers recent time to any reliable degree.
So when something like this bubbles up, even if it's potentially unpleasant, it's kinda nice to know that it's somewhere at least.
