Back to expansions: I think that Earthsiege's expansion pack had a lot of missions that went above and beyond the original game. WOTLK also had much better quests than vanilla WoW. I've also heard that warhammer 40'ks expansion packs were awesome
On the opposite end, I'd have to vote for the incredibly lame "expansions" to the sims 2, and any Day 1 DLC.
ODST, which is a "stand alone expansion" according to bungie, so it still counts. The dang game LOST my single player save file twice: it showed the auto save icon when appropriate, but I wasn't able to continue my single player game(I chose "start campaign"), but the levels I had completed appeared unlocked in the multiplayer menu, so I know the game was tracking my progress. I would have been happy if I'd been able to re-start the level in progress, but I had to re-play the last beaten level to keep up. At that point, I promptly sent the game back to Gamerang and got the vastly super Dragon Rising back later that week.
