I think a lot of it comes down to the fact that there are many people in this community who've known each other for years, and we consider each other friends. No one wants to rip on their friend's creative works, even if they're just expressing their opinion. I think most people aren't that comfortable being so blunt (ala ZB).
The other part of it is, no one want to deter an FM author from making future missions. Some people don't take criticism very well, we've all seen it.
The above reasons are why I enjoy reading the anonymous comments from contest missions. Players can express their views without holding back. I wish there was a way to do that here for all missions.

yes if you are a fan mission maker people will be nice to you
but if you just a poster on the board ,people will only be to quick to verbally slaughter you with anything you post :P

As someone who has written a few reviews I would say, certainly in my case, I was only interested in writing reviews for missions that really grabbed my attention, whether it was because it was an exceptionally good FM or because for some other reason I just had great fun playing it, even though it was not a great mission. It seemed to me at the time to be pointless and self defeating to criticize a mission you wanted to promote to a wider audience.
Authors do get criticized in the mission thread, sometimes harshly, sometimes unfairly, but the standard of mission builds nowadays is so high I myself have rarely felt the need to point out failings as usually I have only disliked a mission because it was not my type of game......there are 28 categories of games style in the Mission by Type thread, so if I don't like one type i just move onto another

Only if there is (or at least they think there is) a reason to do that. Nothing happens without a reason usually.

OK, if we want to continue this discussion I suggest we start a new thread for it. Meanwhile, lets get this thread back on track and help Snacks2 find some FMs. Anyone out there with some suggestions, now would be a good time.

Maybe people praise because they actually like what they've played? Respectfully Russ, to think that posters heap praise to perpetuate an "aura" is a little insulting.
If people have a dislike for an FM and don't post their views, they are probably doing so out of manners. Nothing wrong with that too.
I generally agree with your statements, and never meant to suggest that folks here ingenuinely heap praise on missions to perpetuate an aura of nicety. I think your second statement is what I was trying to get at, that those who might criticize a mission elsewhere tend to hold back here out of politeness, or because the author is a friend, or because they may be lambasted themselves for offering valid criticism (which I've seen happen), or whatever. The net result of that, though, is an aura of nicety and a general perception that most missions are good and some are great, but none are average to lousy.
Now, Mr. Moderator says to get back on topic here, so that's all I'll say on it.
