I happened to come across the lucky hand of glory on a Wiccan website. It's a talisman prepared by a sorcerer for thieves and robbers. The sorcerer needed to find a hanged felon. Cut off the hand and put it in a pot with various herbs and minerals and then it dry it. Some hands of glory could keep robbery victims from waking up. Others were used as a candlestick. If the candle in the hand didn't light, someone in the house was awake.

I always wondered where they got the idea for that.

Using the spirit of a dead thief to help living thieves. I love it and, very appropriate that it should show up in this game. I'm surprised it wasn't explained when it did show up. Maybe I missed it.

Your most recent link is 4 years old. I think we could bear to discuss it again especially since my links aren't dead like the links in those threads.

There's one used in the film The Wicker Man, if I recall correctly.
I can't check because the DVD was stolen.

If you think about it, what did Garrett need the hand of glory for anyway? It didn't matter whether anybody was awake or not. Garrett was good enough that he could still rob the place with them in the same room or just to blackjack 'em (at least the way I play). If you go for the 'keep them from waking up' idea, then it would be easier to accept even though they stay KO'd for the entire time he's there.

The hand of glory also appears in the Harry Potter books. In the books, its a candleholder that conceals the candlelight from anyone but the bearer. Gave me a good laugh when I read that the good ol' hand of glory found its way into the Harry Potter universe :)

Well, first things first... if you're gonna cite, please don't drag Wicca into it. 'Taint some funked up neo-pagan stuff, and it's older than the 1950's.

I'd recommend Shanmonster's site, if only because it has a lot of historical studies into 'the witchcraft craze' that doesn't gloss it over with Wiccanisms.
