He probably had it for luck more than anything. It is called a lucky hand of glory, after all. Plus in THC, one of the objectives on Expert is to leave coins on the Watchman's Grave, for luck.
Apparently Garrett is a bit superstitious.

I beleive in a Thief 2 mission, Garrett says: If I beleived in it, now would be a good time to wish for luck...
Edit: Also, Garrett would easily be able to sell that hand to some desperate thieves for a good coin.

Perhaps his involvement with the trickster's dark project turned his away from believing in luck.
