Upon hearing that EA Mythic had received several crateloads full of Origin Systems (the long-dead studio behind the Wing Commander and Ultima games, plus System Shock, and once home to the power duo of Warren Spector and Richard Garriot) archive materials, a group of fans arranged to catalogue the treasure trove. It turned out that EA seems to have hung onto an incredible amount of stuff, making this find perhaps the PC game equivalent of discovering all those fossilised folk in Pompeii. Best of all, there’s a good chance all these historical goodies will be released to the public.
Read the article for the list of all that's there.
I'm sure it's unlikely any source code will be released to the public, but who knows what cool stuff we'll be able to get our hands on? (and technosaur sounds downright bitchin'!)

perchance to dream...UW source code

And an alternate before Ultima Online version of Ultima 9. God that would have kicked ass.

isn't (

2007-02-06 - Project discontinued
In spite of that fact, there has been a fair amount of successful re-engineering, but a full release of the actual source code would be music to my ears.

Sweet mother of swag, I must own some of this shit! Damn you, intercontinental distances, for putting me ~14,000 kilometres away!

haha, true :)
Lets hope EA does that right thing, for us, not themselves :)

I've been following this ever since WCNews.com said they got the all clear from EA Mythic to go and dig through and archive their Origin stuff. I just naively figured that nobody posted about it here because they weren't all that interested.
The people at WCNews.com said that they are still digging through the stuff that they found; and after all this time, they've only scratched the tip of the iceberg. They have released several interesting Wing Commander oriented tidbits during their 10th anniversary last Sunday.

There was also some behind the scenes stuff that was given to them IIRC. All this stuff, and more, can be found in the (

Funny, during their anniversary celebration they were taking questions about some of the stuff they found in the Mythic archives; I ended up asking them the exact same thing, so I'll post the relevant parts from my IRC log file.

Any more juicy discoveries from mythic you can tell us?
(22:12:02) JasonRocZ:

(22:12:25) LOAF:

*Talks about various bits they saw and uncovered*.

(22:16:38) The_Raven:
You didn't find the source code for System Shock 1/2 or any of the Ultima Underworld games, did you? :P
(22:16:50) LOAF:
I really don't know how to identify source code
(22:16:57) LOAF:
My gut would say probably not, since those weren't done at Origin
(22:16:59) LOAF:
Certainly not SS2
(22:17:23) eddieb:
When you guys are looking for source code, just look for any files ending in .c or .h.
(22:17:30) LOAF:
Uh oh, Lindsay Lohan failed her English test. If only her mom understood her.
(22:17:39) eddieb:
Source code is usually pretty small, if you need help identifying it let me know
(22:17:43) Wedge009-Celsius:
I think LOAF meant the stuff inside the source code?

Yeah, it's sad that Looking Glass Studios died so long ago.
Ultimately, it was a long shot. Origin was only the publishers of UW and Shock1, so I'm not sure if they would keep copies of anything besides the masters.

Shit... These make me miss the good old Origin days so much. What I wouldn't give for a
Privateer 3 or a
real new
Ultima game...

Even still, the official source code to Ultima 7 would probably help the Exult project clean up the combat a bit :)
And the Crusader or Ultima 8 source code would be very nice indeed.
