So he's dead, maybe, but the nightmares continue. That's like some totally Freddy Krueger shit. What's been achieved? Retribution, yeah. Maybe that's worth something, but the real problem hasn't been solved, and god knows if there's any easy solution to it. Eternal vigilance, that's the price, right?

(slideshow)After the obligatory praise for the military, lots of credit for Bush with a few passing references to Obama. If you were to go by their statements, you could almost believe little Georgie kept the promise he made to get ObL back in the fall of 2001. Anyone want to bet that the sure-to-come House resolution won't make it sound like this is all W's doing?

So now they've already buried him at sea apparently, to make sure that the conspiracy theorists will have something to talk about until the end of the world... They'd better have some reliable/unbiased evidence that it really was Osama bin Laden that they killed and buried.
Oh well, I'm gonna miss his wacky video blogs.

Those people would never shut up no matter what - so no big deal.

I love how murdering terrorists is justice for the americans (or at least, the head-of-state). You just made a martyr and officially made Ayman al-Zawahir the leader of Al-Qaeda, which he probably has been behind the curtains already. It's great if American propaganda works so well that now a few people feel vindicated and relieved, but this won't do a shit.
One could make an awesome satire/parody out of USA's hunt for Bin Laden. A few countries fucked and sold to companies, tens of thousands civilians dead with journalists in the mix. Only to get a guy hooked to a dialysis machine.

Don't forget that one agency says they identified him by his DNA, the other says they did so by his face and DNA results aren't in yet.
How do they know his DNA anyway?

Well, they probably had samples of him somewhere, but also he's from a wealthy, decidedly non-terrorist family to get comparative samples from, with at least a few famous members such as Wafah Dufour, whose twin towers I would very much like to put my jumbo jet between.

Just a thought, but if he were to stand trial, how much of what he's actually accused of would they be able to prove, and would a large portion of the evidence have to be kept secret in the interests of 'national security'? Perhaps it's better for the US government that he didn't stand trial.

After the recent announcements of Bob Gates leaving the Defense department and Gen. Petraeus leaving Afghanistan, I figured the personnel changes signal a withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan. Some media pundits have taken the same view.
Perhaps I'm too cynical, but the timing of bin Laden's death seems more than coincidental. I wonder if one of the following is true:
a. The US may have had the ability to take out Osama bin Laden for some time, but the administration either feared a Taliban backlash or feared his death would lead to waning support for the war among the American public. So they kept him around until deciding to end the war, and now his death is part of the exit strategy. They can start pulling out now and still claim some small measure of success.
b. The Pakistanis have been secretly protecting bin Laden and playing both sides. Upon learning that the US will start pulling out, they worried that they would have to take sides and fight al Qaeda and the Taliban on their own, and/or worried about losing US military aid. So they played their trump card in a desperate attempt to get the US to continue in Afghanistan and continue paying the bill.
In any case, I find it hard to believe that Osama bin Laden would set up residence in a mansion in Islamabad unless he was being protected.
