Have they speculated on motive yet? The impression I got from somewhere was that he was basically opening fire on Spring Break for its amorality or some such.

I think it was an assassination attempt. Dude parks truck bomb, it goes off around 3, and he gets to the Utøya ferry around six dressed as a cop and saying he needs to check on the political youth camp. I heard something about a speech by the PM supposed to go down and that the former PM had given one a couple of days earlier. Basically looks to me like this guy hit two places he figured the PM would be, plus cause even more awfulness in the process.

He's apparently an extreme right-wing nut, this was a camp for the labour party youth organization. They were all likely to be legitimate targets from his point of view (he even called them Stoltenberg Jugend...).

You'd have to assume he had some such rage motivation, but it doesn't even pass the "not delusional" test. This isn't a Bolshevik operative training center... It's an effing summer camp where the worst you could imagine are a few substanceless motivational speeches, a little fishing, and smores.
The 84 (and possibly rising) number really is disgusting. It paints a picture of this guy just indiscriminately walking around and shooting anything that moves hours on end on some numbed bloodlust. How do you just keeping pulling the trigger? It's inhuman on so many levels.

To me the psychos who engineered our most recent financial meltdown are equally inhuman and equally criminal. Even though they didn't use guns and bombs, they must have known that millions of people would be ruined and many of those would take their own lives. And it wasn't even for some sort of ideological motive (not that ideology is an excuse) but only for garden variety greed.
And when it comes to political leaders like Kim Jong-il, Robert Mugabe, Idi Amin, to name a few contemporary examples, what is it about their pathology or our collective nature that allows millions of people to be duped and enslaved by them?
If you have seen the documentary "The Corporation" you know that not only are we the seemingly unwitting victims of this pathology, we have enshrined it in corporate law. If you don't know what I mean by that, watch the film.

Huh. Interesting bit about the "we make sure they feel they are equals." But should criminals, especially those who killed or molested kids, be treated as equals? Don't they forfeit that right?
But then again, the video states Norway has the lowest murder rate so they must be doing something right.

It's not even so much that they 'snap.' It's because they are very good at convincing people they are normal, affecting all the usual emotional cues at the appropriate times, yet often not actually feeling anything.
And nicker you're an asshole for trying to equate the mass murder of scores of people, mostly children, with the financial meltdown, diminishing both. Hang your fucking head in shame for threadshitting before we'd even had half a page in, getting the ball rolling for this thread to be fucking terrible before it's even off the ground.
