Stop thread sh*tting ffs. I know you're not really that dumb.

I thought that was the logical progression from that line of reasoning. I mean, every time I've seen someone go, "He used the game to train for his act of terror!" they invariably follow it up with, "Clearly, the game should be banned!" I've not yet seen an exception to that, so ...
You're making a slippery slope fallacy here, but one that just happens to be correct. When it comes to the way people react to situations like this, logic typically does not apply.

I've been hearing, and watching, the events unfolding over the weekend. Can't imagine what it must've been like, being stuck on that small island with that madman. My sympathy goes out to the victims and their families. :(

And how do you guys define threadshitting? To me it starts when people call each other names, just because they don`t like what the other person`s saying or is disagreeing with them. Dethtoll - c`mon dude, did you really expect such a loaded subject to go on quietly in CommChat (where we can have war over sandwiches)? I don`think civilised discussion is a sign of disrespect towards the victims.
Nicker has a valid point. It is maybe uncomfortable to bring it up in light of such tragedy, but it`s unfortunately very much connected - as a journalist you should know what are the main narratives in the world today. Popped out to shops yesterday and one look at redtops taught me that what happened was a "TWIN TERROR!" and also "NORWAY`S 9/11". Right - o. Generally, we should all cover in fear (after subjecting most of the freedoms first) because all the terrorists, pedofiles and Monsters are out to get us.
Meanwhile, Greece/Euro collapses while responsible are getting bonuses, genocide always in progress somewhere in Africa and weekly terror attacks in Iraq/S Asia.
Who gives a shit though? We have the terrorists and monsters (like Fritzl) to worry about.
I`m sorry but terrible as terror attacks in the Western world are, they`re really isolated acts of madness compared to ongoing world-raping by assorted rich & powerful. Reminds me of this old trope about plane crashes - yes, 200 dead... meanwhile stats for car crashes from any given weekend, are as terrifying.
As for violent videogames, well maybe it`s time to stop pretending these have completely no influence on anybody - ever. It`s a complete nonsense, these shape kids as much as any other media. Some more than others. I`m not saying this because of Modern Warfare playing madman, but in general, after seeing the comments here. Yes, we should fight against any crusaders like Jack T,newspapers witch hunts, green blood and banning bullshit. But also be aware of its possible influence and parents/siblings responsibility when it comes to ratings system or better yet, common sense.
Also, while I totally disagree with general notion of capital punishment it`s hard not to share the sentiment - for this asshole accomplished his sick mission and now will gloat about it for the rest of his life. Only that, I don`t believe executing him would deter others - when you`re insane you do not care that much.

I've never read such things before... This direct portal to a criminal mind's inner workings is fascinating. :o

It just shows that this was a way of life for him, for at least the last decade ... answers the question of how people like this get so unhinged, and why he didn't attract notice since he planned the whole thing with a cover story for every piece.
I found a blog just last week with some interesting academic articles posted (not at all radical, stuff like the future of nanotech, biological roots of consciousness, etc), and I went to the "content" internal-page to just get them in one place and found buried in there an operations manual for that absurd neo-nazi club he was part of... Or I guess this was the pagan variant, because the chief deity was Odin or something and it was anti-Christian, whereas this guy called himself a Knights Templar and his thing was Christian... but otherwise it was the same schtick. It had all this crap about electing masters & grandmasters and quasi-religious ceremonies (meetings, weddings, funerals) and long term plans for liberating Europe. Good lord it's like a sicko ARG. *You are not a knights templar. Get a hold of yourself man.* But I've always sort of thought radical politics is a kind of fantasy performance art or ARG, just that some unfortunately take it seriously.

Exactly, but I wouldn't dismiss it as "it just shows how..." It's obvious he'd gotten on that trip for the long haul and prepared accordingly, but actually reading about the details, how he merged everyday life with his greater plan, is chilling, and it's extremely interesting to read his take on the whole thing.

He's another Travis Bickle. They were there before games. They were there before TV. They were there before movies. It's something white people have specialised in for a long time.

I wasn't intending to dismiss it. That's just the wording I used. Obviously he took it all very seriously himself, and it had tragically serious consequences. :(

For some people, real life is larping...
