But we're still alive. It is a good thing, I guess. The closed source of the engine is holding back our community from expanding. We really should try to rewrite the engine, make it free (as in freedom, not as in free beer): that'll surely add a second breath to the City.
There's been a lot of talk over the source code over the years and I think at this point nobody really knows who has the code or if it is even accessible. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. Honestly though, I think fan mission makers have done some incredible things with what is available. Also, what would fan missions play like if people went in and changed the very soul of the engine? Would mission really be any better if some limitations were removed? It would be cool to see the source code released someday but I feel that it is this mysterious and elusive thing much like the bow upgrade.

Nah, just play with code to get the similar way of lighting plus a few tricks with sound. And the "soul" it is.
But imagine what we could add? Normal inventory. Normal extension system. Get rid of DirectDraw. Opmisations. We could even teach guards to swim!
The biggest difficulty is backward compatibility. It would be a real shame to lose all the FM heritage we already have.

Me too! I know you're a fan of Dewdrop also. I even made a puppet of her long time ago and I'm só grateful that many FM builders sometimes, wel mostly, make Dewdrop appear in a mission. Lately I'm replaying a lot of FM's, some from a long time ago, but it strikes me everytime to find out that I betatested some of them, and while seeing my name as a tester in the afterscript, I always have to pink a tear away. I wish my children could see this. Only some of my grandchildren are interested in the Thief game. Well, You'll got stuck with me!!!

I disagree, sorry! Then it wouldn't be a Thief game anymore, but more of a common nowadays game. I would skip it then.

@Kamlorn - I can't read that page because it's in Russian, but it looks like it's the project page for Dark Engine Viewer. That's definitely
not a project that's trying to rewrite the dark engine, it's just a utility to view some of the existing resources for Dark (like models, animations, map layouts, etc).
