Oh hey, CRC, welcome to TTLG. We're a bunch of contrary elitist fucks who can't agree on anything. It's like one big family here. :D

That looks fantastic!
And complaining about the animation? This is UT2004. You must have short memories if you really don't remember just how
extremely recently it is that some FPS developers have made the effort to match animation with movement?
Unfortunate though it may be, the old slip-and-slide walking and running is the norm.
I recall that the old slip-and-slide was still done well enough in most everything since the advent of 3D that it didn't break immersion in most cases, unless the model was walking into a wall or up stairs and inclined slopes.
The zombies seem like they're wooden mannequins that almost glide across the floor, which instead of being scary just looks... unfortunate. As you said. Thing is, this is all the more noticeable because the rest of the mod looks quite brilliant.
At any rate, I'm sure it's fairly fixable, even in UT2004.

You wanna know something? You definately won't get an argument from me on that matter! The sliding animation issue is something I'm not pleased with and I've tried over the years to constantly fix and tweak it but I just can't get it down right. The walk cycle itself is alright, but the way the engine handles the movement of the actors themselves makes it such a pain to get perfect! This is actually really prevalent in the stock game, especially with invasion mode monsters.
I hate that they give that gliding illusion but it was the best I could do. I actually had to pull myself away from it otherwise this thing would never get released! :D
Hey man, sorry if I come across as a whiny bag of piss. I know it's not easy getting these things done, and honestly your mod looks bloody impressive. I'll have to agree, if it took that long to get the proper results from the engine for the animation, then you did the right thing by moving on. Guess it pays to have some perspective from the inside. :thumb:
Oh, and what dethtoll said. Welcome. :D

Animations aside, I have to say that this is some of the best graphical work I've seen in UE2. If I wasn't told otherwise, I would've assumed this was done in Source.
Great job, Chicken+Ribs. :D
Edit: Did you render and export the shadow maps from Max or another high end editor? I don't remember any 2k4 based games having lighting quite that detailed.
Nope, it's all UED! You just have to set the shadowmap values of whatever surfaces to something like 2 or 1. I'm sure some maps out there have it but it is quite a performance hit for lower end machines so I don't think it's been used too often. I think people end up using projectors for detailed shadows in MP maps because it's not such a hog.

Seems like half of all mods these days are zombie-centered. Maybe I'm biased though, since I find that zombies tend to be boring.
I remember reading an article in METRO (the free newspaper they hand out in public transportation),back in August, saying that zombies were becoming the latest hot fashion.
I thought to myself back then that if such a newspaper was printing such an article, we would be doomed to be stuffed with zombie themed media in no time. Guess it happened...

Whilst this seems to be the age of zombie mods at the moment, I gotta say I really liked that trailer. Be downloading that one for sure.

It's weird how things like this work out. I actually started this beast back in 2002/03 and it's just taken me this damn long to get it done lol. :) The timing is weird for sure though with things like KF, L4D, PROTOTYPE and some others already out.

Looks interesting and atmospheric, but I must second the animations breaking the illusion. One of the reason's why I've never been a big fan of UT mods in the first place (the games always feel slidey and slippery, especially compared to HL engine).
Also, you guys need a new trailer editor.

Looks pretty good, I'll be sure to check it out. Hopefully the music is better in the game though, that trailer track was awful.

Arguable (the sliding has always looked rubbish, IMO), but the fact is that in the vast majority of 3D games, movement animations are for constant, even steps, which helps to hide the fact that the actual movement is independent of the feet.
Try to implement an irregular stumbling animation in such an engine, and it's hardly surprising that it stands out. There might be some room for improvement, but you're working with a system that fundamentally doesn't support what you're trying to achieve.
(This is one of the reasons I think the animation in Left 4 Dead is absolutely superb, but of course they had the luxury of customising the game engine with this very purpose in mind...)
edit: Oh, and I rather liked the trailer editing and music. I guess dethtoll was right...

Animation looks good enough to me, and I doubt I'll notice it when a zombie's trying to eat my face off.
The mod looks to me like that Land of the Dead game, without all the suck.
