Gotta aim for the stump, too. 3 shots all in all will usually do it, 4 for shotgun zombies (who don't move, so you can easily take cover.) Your knife will help a great deal as well. What you want to do with that first encounter is to take out the ones already on you- keep moving backwards and don't be afraid to use an alt-fire 3-burst to the face when they get up close and personal- and then carefully work your way back down the hallway. The zombies that come after you crawl under the fence can't follow you back under it (zombies, in fact, are stupid enough that they often can't step over a couple of boards) so snipe from safety.
Zombie combat for me has basically relied on the pistol for the most part, but I've been using the shotgun lately because it doubles as a melee weapon and is great for clearing out crowds of 3 or more.
That first encounter is nasty, but it gets better afterwards.

Weird, I didn't find the first encounter hard, even if it was almost a slideshow. Only one of the zombies actually managed to hit me and that's because it had no head and I didn't knew about blowing off the neck too (kind of weird that though). The zombies move extremely fast (as fast as you actually!) which is kind of awkward considering they're rotting corpses and sometimes you can't jump on the hood of a car even if you managed to do so a while back with a same looking one (I guess a "mantle up on ledge" function would be good).

Atmosphere is great. I'm amazed that this guy fit soo much detail into his levels. I think maybe 10% (if that) of any scene is actually BSP. He spent his time.
The optimisation is a real let down though. I find myself frustrated when i die not because the game is hard but because I can't play it. The first encounter is hard.. its also really bad for framerates. the next chapter the first few fights are not as difficult, and you also get a better framerate to do it.... marginally.
I'm running a Q6600 w/3 gb of ram and a 512mb 8800gt, and my average framerate is about 18fps. when I'm looking straight at the floor it shoots up to 60, and when there are zombies on screen it usually dips to about 11 (in that first encounter) or about 14 on average after that. Which makes ammo conserving impossible because I'll shoot at the head but because of the low framerate I can't track the headbob of the zombie. so I constantly miss. and if I turn around I get a good 2 maybe 3 frames to show me exactly what way i'm facing. I want to really love this game, but I dont think I'll be able to without some optimisation. If I can play UT3 maxed out on everything but AA and keep a 30fps constant, then this can be optimised to run well. I found that turning the detail level down DID help by about 3 or 4 fps. and Xeniths fog trick did absolutely nothing on my machine. I was excited to try it but there were no results.
Also that grainy filter is ass. I'm sure it takes up a few cycles of brainpower, being able to turn it off would be nice. seeing as how in any of the cutscenes it isn't there.

The optimization is pretty fucking bad. It's at its worst in the last section of Cedar Woods, before the apartment. CRC's working on a patch to fix this.

Hmm... if you turn everything down to Low -3 it runs rather smoothly. At least I can play it now.

Over on the OoH forums some guy went over the maps and detailed what was causing the slowdown- a lot of per-poly collision detection on static meshes, lack of zoning/portaling, far too many alpha textures, too many particles, among other things. Makes sense. I'm pretty close to the end here, but later on after it's been patched I'll go through it again.

The first patch is out now, and thankfully so. I had tried the fog slider trick before the patch, and it really didn't help too much.. But After the patch, when the actual fog slider was coded into the menu of Out of Hell, it ran better.
So those having framerate issues, do yourself a favor and get the patch. :) I still get some horrible lagginess at times, but my computer is a bit of a dinosaur anyway. (AMD Sempron 2800+, 1 gb ram, 6800XT)
Hi Chicken+Ribs Combo!:)

Your post prompted me to look at the website, there's no patch #2, just the one that we've known about for several weeks. Next time please read the thread before posting.
sNeaksieGarrett on 8/12/2009 at 03:30
I never said patch #2. I just said the patch
And I did read the thread. dethtoll mentioned a patch yes, but it wasn't out at that time. (dethtoll posted November 7th, the patch came out November 21st.)

To be fair, it was never actually mentioned the patch was out when it came out, at least not in this thread.
