One of the most revolutionary features that I can recall about Outcast was the advanced AI system that taken as a whole surpassed anything that came before it:
* NPC's had memories and could be relied upon to point you in the general direction of where they last saw another NPC if asked;
* NPCs changed over time and adapted to the world that Cutter changed;
* Enemy AI would work cleverly against you in groups: group leaders would order some of his team members to flank you by going around buildings to cut you off from every side;
* Enemy AI unaware of Cutter stealthily making his way into their camp with the use of invisibility would notice changes to their environments;
* And as a product of the advanced enemy AI, combat that was exciting and tactical.
The story was definitely interesting, moving at times even, had terrific humour in parts and I was completely absorbed in the characters and the plight of the Talan. It was one of those worlds that managed to suck me in more than many games that I can think of before or since.

Yeah it was definitely a Living Breathing World before anyone really knew what that was, never mind it becoming a tired cliche.
I'm watching a playthrough now and the sheer amount of content is amazing. The voice acting never misses a trick and there must be hours and hours of it. All the details about the culture you've dropped into too, and all the little things you can do just stumbling around.
The mood of wanding around big spaces that you can find all these little discoveries with their own stories at your own pace is similar to Call of Pripyat now that I think about it. The story isn't as open and reactive to your actions as Deus Ex, but not much is. Still very impressive though.

Hopefully they use a voxel engine again that you can only run at a playable frame rate on a top end cpu. Got to keep it authentic to the original.
