The lack of reading comprehension is creating a great deal of stress around here, from small quibbles to witch burnings.

It's amazing to me, if you read the few interviews with D'Astous, how frequently he talks about doing something "new" or "innovative" or "breaking new ground". It's like every other sentence. From that interview alone:
"to really break ground on the traditional way of playing."
" it's going to be, I hope, very innovative and bring a lot of new things to the table,"
"We want to bring something new to the table"
" we want to bring it to another level."
" We're going to bring certainly a lot of innovation to both "
In contrast, whenever he talks about staying true to the original games or listening to fans (which is rare), he always describes it as a "challenge".

I'd like to think that when he calls it a challenge, he's acknowledging not just expectations, but how difficult I imagine it must be to really grow a new tree from the same roots.

He didn't say that...
And I think you guys are jumping to conclusions way too early.
Although not quite on the thread's topic, I would just like to say that because of the manner in which Thief Deadly Shadows disregarded some really basic tenets (yes: tenets) of Thief, thereby reducing the game in the eyes of most of us here, while not necessarily improving its commercial success or converting more people into taffers; many here are concerned that the fourth game will again do things poorly ignoring the Tenets of Thief.
Yes: Tenets of Thief.
So that is why we are up in a kerfuffle about all of this.
Stop following tenets and zealots get into a kerfuffle, that's about it really.

I don't think there's really any problem with them playing with the pace a bit in Thief 4. Of course Thief 4 shouldn't be fast-paced blah blah blah, but it doesn't ALL have to be slow-paced. IMO what really makes Thief what it is is that horrible feeling that you're going to screw up. And WHEN you screw up, all hell brakes loose. THAT'S what's supposed to be fast-paced, when you miss the blackjack or miscalculate and walk into the hallway into a guard's face and have to book it.
It's why I don't get how people can just quickload the second they're caught. Where's the fun in that? Then there's no fear in messing up, no adrenaline rush.

Perfectionist playthrough? I did that first time round, and I really regretted doing that (it was on TDS though, so I didn't ruin TMA or TDP for myself) afterwards, as it made the game less fun...

They should just create a new IP that has nothing to do with Thief. Maybe call it "Sneaky Shooter Guy".
