The problem is just that you are too dense to understand his brilliance.
And you call me a troll.
(not that SubJeff doesn't deserve a tweaking at least once a day)

I had to Google "Mignola". Ah. Never read the comics so I don't care how faithful it is.
I have, (and you should,) and I actually preferred the sequel, myself. The original made too many changes to the basic dynamics of Hellboy and his team, while at the same time not being that very interesting despite hewing closer to what the comics tended to do. The sequel, with different personal circumstances for the characters, reverts back to what the comics were like and they interact better for it, which makes for a more interesting movie which, del Toro aside, is not that far outside what Hellboy would actually face.

I'm another fan of
Blade 2. Yes, it's silly. Yes, some of the CGI is really bad. But it had charm and personality, didn't take itself too seriously, and it was fun. Same with
Hellboy, really. (Can't remember
Mimic too well.) My favourite Del Toro film is definitely
The Devil's Backbone, but for sheer fun I'll choose
Blade 2 and
Hellboy (the Director's Cut - not a huge improvement, but some welcome tweaks).
Mimic was taken out of del Toro's hands by the studio, andhe wasn't very pleased with what they did with it afaik, so it really shouldn't be held for or against him. And I can't remember much of what I saw of it anyway. I prefer the first Blade movie, but II is still good fun, and I love the Hellboy movies. Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth are just fucking brilliant.

Why are you all comparing this to transformers when it's clearly a tribute to kaiju? Even the setting is compatible with that... haven't any of you seen Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla?
Well, yeah. What's del Toro thinking? I GET TO MAKE MY OWN GODZILLA MOVIE WOOO most probably. It's not a great trailer, but del Toro + Idris Elba cancelling the apocalypse is basically all I need.

Wow.
I really do need to stay out of movie threads

Man, I grew up with the old dubbed-over Godzilla movies. This is like a blast from the past to me.
Western Kaiju film? Yes please! I hope this becomes a genre. Cloverfield was cool, but it was more horror than action.

Thank fuck for that, I was beginning to think I was the only one who "got" it.

Indeed. I happen to like a bit of Japanese Toku kid's shows - let me tell you, Toku nerds are quite looking forward to this one! The thought of it interests me as well, although I haven't really looked into it all yet.

I strongly recommend checking out the Director's Cut of Mimic (and listening to GdT's commentary of same). It's so much better than the theatrical, and it's almost ironic how the Weinstein's pulled out all the stops fucking him (they brought in Robert Rodriguez and others to shoot second unit) in order to 'save' it, and ended up with a worse film.

It looks huge and dumb, but kinda fun. Sold!
The only two downsides of the trailer were the inexplicable usage of GladOS voice and the horribly overused BRAAAHMMMMM trailer music.
I'm just glad it doesn't stop me from doing my monster from the deep script I've been tinkering with for nearly 4 years and just got revitalised by a visit to wave central in Hawaii! :D

I think the reasons for that are fairly obvious: This movie isn't taking itself seriously. It's a B-movie with an A-movie budget. And it's gonna be amazing.
