I don't want to hijack the thread but this seems a suitable place to ask a question about the Painkiller series. I bought the Painkiller pack during the steam sale over Christmas but have felt a little disappointed with the original. Each level seems to be chopped into small isolated areas which don't allow you to proceed until you've dealt with the turkey shoot in that area.
I normally love games of this type but the fact that the game seems to contrive to restrict your progress is something that annoys. I feel I must be missing something - does it get better as the game progresses?
It gets harder. Minor spoiler: In a later level, you have to take out artillery pieces in a LARGE airfield.
My view:
Original: Cool.
Exp: Not bad. Feels different.
Overdose: More of the same from what I gathered from the demo.
Resurrection: Never played it.

Not trying to be a dick, but LOL. Most basic reviews ever. Especially since you haven't even played 1/2 of the games you wrote about. ;)

You may be surprised by the final stage of the vanilla game, btw, Al. For a game so utterly devoid of story, and one that likes to throw random ninjas into what's supposedly the Sydney Operahouse at that, the final stage is... surprisingly poignant and artistic.
And not at all spiritually uplifting. :(
Are we thinking of the same level?
Where you shoot shockwaves at Satan in a weird frozen-time cut-through diagram of history? It was kinda cool I guess, but I missed the poignancy and artisticness?

That's not just a cutthrough diagram of history. Ignore the fight with Satan for a moment and consider what you're seeing- pictures of war from throughout the history of mankind, frozen in time, from the medieval periods through the World Wars, finally culminating in a fucking mushroom cloud. And even though everything is frozen around you, you can still hear the noises of war, from hooves galloping to machinegun fire and frantic shouting over the radio. And this is supposed to be Hell. Kind of a strong message, isn't it?

War is hell. I guess it's deeper than the rest of Painkiller. Fantastic game though + Battle Out of Hell.
I got Overdose in steam sale over xmas - started the first level but I haven't got any further with it yet. Seems like more of the same so far, which is good.

Haha. Well, I enjoyed them. I don't think I would have enjoyed them less in the past if I played the later releases.

I may ask my buddy for his Overdose disc. I want to check it out for myself, just to see the changes from the original game.

I´ve just bought this game recently, and after a two hour of buggy gameplay i retreive this game to the store, how come a game like this comes offline with a warning "new version avaliabe, run it now".
i first ignored this message on the top of the screen, only later then i realize the game was with serious bugs that where preventing me to progress in the game, i was kinda liking the game, even having confusing levels, but when it comes to seriously affected with bugs, then the best thing is to return the game.
It´s a pity because i always enjoyed Painkiller Games, Jowood should be more honest about their releases :(

A developer releasing patches to fix bugs! How dare they!

Overdose is a pile of shit anyway. Listening to this terrible Duke Nukem knockoff spout the same stupid lines over and over again is not my idea of fun.
