Larry, if you open any mission with rain in it you'll see splashes when they hit the ground but also any object's OBB, like roof objects for example. It may be there is some property that is set on the roof archetypes which enables it and it's not set by default on most other objects, I'd have to dig deeper into dark.gam to see. But it does work on roofs because it can cause problems due to the cuboid OBB and the non-cuboid model.

I classify "causing problems" as an indicator of "not working".
I've never messed with rain and only have some very hazy recollections of missions which use it and posts about it to go on. My memory is that the usability was limited pre-newdark, and I don't know what new dark has done to improve rain effects. Maybe I remember wrong.

The only limitation I know of is the one I mentioned. If you build roofs from solid brushes, all is well and rain works well. I don't know of anything in particular that NewDark has done in that area, but it would take a complete rewrite of the physics engine I reckon to make splashes work well with objects.

By that metric the entire engine doesn't work.
