I must have gone through that room at least ten times, but I didn't see any bats before.
I actually started over, because I made a mistake the first time by knocking out one of the guards by the gate, and that broke the possibility of getting a clue from the other guard at the gates.
Edit: I actually also broke the game the first time by visiting the ruin, and discovering the murder scene, via some roof climbing

Need key... door on side of St. Remey's , access to I think a grave yard, access to house/area seen from telescope and I think maybe one more door.....[/spoiler]
