Thanks for help with all the game suggestions, people! ... The games have been selected, parent-approved, and are pending claim as steam gifts!
So, until the next *hey!-it's-not-my-family* crisis, I will be on the lookout for the other titles in upcoming charity bundles!
(Guess I only got myself to blame for making it look so easy the first time with HB9's release the week of the kid's birthday.)
Oh, and he's getting Guacamelee! Gold Edition and Spelunky ... So shhhhh!

How about Torchlight? Or maybe the myriad of Telltale adventure games like Back to the Future, Homestar Runner, or Sam and Max?

I completely forgot about torchlight! He might be able to handle light-rpgs.
Last xmas I watched him play some Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction -- He basically just brute force his way through it, showing little patience.
(I got some old retail copies of Morrowind 3, original Far Cry, and Doom 3 but I don't know if they'll pass parents approval.)

Terraria might be a good choice if he hasn't already got it.
Also, Spelunky, Portal (or Portal 2), Defense Grid, Braid and Scribblenauts Unlimited are ones that might also be suitable depending on his game tastes.

For my 12th birthday I was given Knights Of Legend. I'm pretty sure a 12 year old could handle Torchlight.

Buy them an old 8-bit Nintendo. Give them the gift of frustration and fun.

I'm so glad my parents didn't care about that.
If he likes space travel you can try
Dead Space FTL.

... I'll leave any and all dispensing of corporal punishment to his parents.Which will be an inevitability. I broke a fairly expensive Tiffany lamp while rage quitting a Nintendo game back when I was 11. My mom has only recently forgiven me for that...
Though seriously, you really can't go wrong with 8 and 16-bit Nintendo games for a 12 year old. Mario, Zelda, maybe even Metroid. If he loved Bastion and Limbo, he's bound to to love the old classics. Though if you intend on sticking to modern PCs, then Rogue Legacy is pretty good, as is Hammerwatch. If he liked Trine 2, there's always the original to fall back on. Cave Story is also great. Same for Aquaria. Really, just about any indie platformer would be perfect for him (save for Super Meat Boy. Not because it's bad, but because it's a mean damn game).
Oh, and Dark Souls.
