I can only assume that you are familiar with/have played the classics in the crpg game? The Ultima, Wizardry, Might and Magic, and Bard's Tale series'? Even perhaps the SSI D&D/Dragonlance stuff? If not, that is what your soul hath been craving. If so, yeah Torment is awesome. The story alone is worth a nostalgic playthrough at least once! I'm not sure what your particular level of crpg fanatacism is. When it comes to crpg, my fanatacism is rabid, and frothy. I have been playing since Wizardry I. Imagine my luck friend, when I watched The Dark Project unfold, as it sealed the tomb. :ebil:

If I've played and loved Fallout, am I really going to get something great out of Torment? Or I have actually played the best 'that era' RPG kinda thing? Or am I completely offbase here?
Yes - Planescape Torment is a CRPG masterpiece and to my mind blows all of its contemporaries and the new generation RPGs out of the water. I personally enjoyed PST more than Fallout, but I'm partial to the D&D setting and loved the Baldurs Gate series. If you liked the top-notch story, roleplaying depth, and dialogue choices of Fallout 1/2, you should be thrilled with PST. The gameplay is a little different from Fallout and much less action-oriented, but I think any Fallout fan will appreciate PST above all the other D&D Infinity Engine games.
I don't know what other RPGs you've played, but I must recommend the following:
For 2D isometric CRPGs, I suggest you try Arcanum, Baldurs Gate 2 (surely you've played this?), and Temple of Elemental Evil (patched, as the original version is so buggy that it's unplayable).
Since you like adventure or action-adventure games, you might enjoy Gothic 1/2, Summoner, The Witcher, and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. I've heard good things about Dragon Age, but can't vouche for it since I haven't played it.
If first-person turn-based playing comparable to the Might & Magic series is tolerable for you, then Wizardry 8 is worth your time.
If you're done with all of that or care to explore the critically-panned and obscure, try Arx Fatalis, Gorasul, Evil Islands, and Soulbringer (which is packaged with some versions of PST). Some might laugh that I mention these games, which are not exactly brilliant gems, but they are generally fun and pleasant diversions.

http://www.tk421.net/wizardry/graphics/wiz1.gifAre you old enough to have played it on Apple II? Or was it PC?

No I'm not a big RPGer at all. Haven't played any of those others.
But the fact that I've 'heard' (seen it highly regarded) so much about PST through the years, and it showing up on this list... plus:

...seals it. I guess the thing can't be as retro-'bad' as some of the adventure stuff I've played lately in search of the lost gems, both indie and oldie, so I won't worry about that before giving it a go.

Sorry about the hijack - we now return you to your planned thread.

Right before Wizardry II came out, I recieved an apple II from my uncle who returned home from the air force. He had Wizardry and Ultima installed. It also had Castle Wolfenstein, Mystery House, and Wizard and the Princess on it. Of course it wasnt my first rpg. I had Dungeons of Dagaroth in 1979 for my trs-80 when I was 5. :)

i know this may not be the right place to say this, considering the neighboring deux ex forums, but hey -- didn't DE have HORRIBLE ai? i mean, i played it and it ruined the whole experience for me, there was no challenge in achieving progress when things r so easy. i remember being able to shoot them from a distance, they'd run around in circles a few times and return to the same spot. 1-2 times and they die... it was just horribly frustrating. i didn't bother with it after a certain point... and despite it's great potential, i just can't see it being number 1. its too flawed.
the first 10 places must be perfect games that only differ by style and appeal to a wider crowd, u know, subjective things like that.
and where the f is doom in this list??? HAX

I always smile when I see Thief II on these lists. The land where technology and magic coexsist uneasily with Mechanist bots. :ebil:
