It's just a list because the little blurbs are in the magazine.

I feel like starting a new thread, where everyone posts one game that hasn't been mentioned yet in the list, from any platform, and why it deserves to be in the TTLG top 100(0), but that would be like herding cats (and a few snarling dogs).
Or chakats, even.
I'll start.
NOTE: please have your rose-tinted spectacles handy.
Prince of Persia (1989): Jordan Mechner spends months rotoscoping his brother jumping around for animations in a computer game which promptly becomes one of the most famous and lauded PC releases of all time.
The story isn't original, but it is timeless. There's a very short intro - no words - that spells out all you need to know: save the girl. You have an hour.
I remember it being famous for its super-fluid animation and fantastic graphics at the time. It's also famous for being very fucking difficult - sadistic, even. (I'll never forget the first time I jumped into one of those traps. *schwick*)
Even today, it's a game that compels you to play and explore it. It's still one of the very few games that evokes that mystical Arabian Nights atmosphere, and it'll still have you cursing at the sheer volume of insta-death experiences, but you'll persevere till you reach the end anyway. It's just that sort of game. They don't make many like it any more.

I'd go with Karateka over PoP, but I'll admit I didn't spend nearly as much time with the latter.

I remember poring over issues of Nintendo Power magazine, and I remember an early issue had a review of PoP. Having only a Game Boy, I wanted to buy Prince of Persia due to the realistic animation they crowed about and the super-high difficulty. It had cool traps, sword fighting, and a girl at the end. Plus, it was set in Persia!
To this day, I have never played a Prince of Persia game.
Why did I ever get rid of those magazines?

Prince of Persia was a game that I just couldn't beat when I was a kid, it was just too hard. However, I played it again many years later, and it was a complete cakewalk. I never really figured out why it was so hard for me as a kid.

The same for me, actually. I think practice or more familiarity with games of its ilk paid off later.
PoP 2, though? Fuuuuuget it. Even when I was a kid I knew the game was actively trying to get me to hate it. Difficulty curve like a sheer brick wall. Couldn't bear it any more after getting about halfway through.
@doctorfrog: No time like the present to start. Three little words: Sands of Time. It's only like the best platformer ever made.

What an excellent time for it to be on sale at GOG, then :)
First though, I'm playing the NES version, which was identical to the GB version. It's pretty good, like a more narrowly defined Spelunky.

That list was worth it purely for the description of Fallout 3 as :

It's like the Mad Max movies, without the vehicles.
or Half Life 2 as :

I still remember that one tech-trailer in Ravenholm where Gordon uses that radiator for the first time... needless to say the game totally imploded then exploded my cranium all over the monitor screen and the surrounding bedroom when it finally came out.
So yeah the whole list seems to have been written by a bunch of 10 year olds.

well, it's a reader's poll...I'm surprised GearsOfWar or Halo1 did not win.they are PC games.
