I'm kind of disappointed that the PCG staff would put Quake III: Arena on the list while leaving out the original Quake altogether. Blasphemy!

While I think Quake III was important in a way Q2 wasn't, Quake 1 is certainly worthy.

Sad to see Thief and SS2 fall deep deep into the recesses of the reader's top 100 (if they made the cut at all, I didn't go back far enough to check but they weren't in the top 40) but it's interesting that DX still made it up there. Not terribly surprising (re: Thief/SS2) of course given that they didn't sell as well as one would have liked at the time, but the games seem to have cult notoriety now, having been showing up in Editor's lists and Best of Decade lists forever, and I suppose I expected them to catch a bit more reader praise.
Regardless, it must be heartening and depressing all the same for those LG guys seeing their games lauded so much after the fact - really nice to see their artistic merit continues to shine through today despite the graphical advancements and technological breakthroughs that drive a lot of gaming, yet sad that games of that calibre are rarely attempted anymore and if they are, they are bastardized to the point of BioShock.

Agreed.
By the way, it wasn't lost on me that you extended the olive branch. For what it's worth, I apologize that my insults were all stings and no laughs. ;)

For those who didn't check low enough:
Quake is #94
Thief 2 is #85
UT is #61
SS2 is #43

A few other notables:
Stalker #62
Witcher #52
Morrowind #26
Bioshock #15
Pretty awful list overall. But the worst infractionl:
Doom #41
I mean obviously, time period has to be taken in account with all these games. To have Doom so far down the list is kinda inexcusable. :p

I'd put Descent higher than Doom. And Ultima Underworld. And probably about 100 other games from that era.

Guess we gotta face it. These lists are going to be less and less in tune with our views as time goes on and the newest whiz-bang titles of the day get more attention from the current crop of gamers. Not many people who get into gaming today via, say, GTA IV are going to go and play GTA III or Mafia, after all.

That's just you, though; DooM was great in all ways.

No, I think he's right on this. What the hell does 'all ways' mean, anyway?
