It was a perfect combination of graphics, sound, visceral action and atmosphere. It also went on to change gaming in ways very few other games have. Some of its features appeared earlier elsewhere, but none at the time had the raw power DooM did.

There's no doubt it was influential. The graphics engine was very slick, it laid down a lot of foundations of modern network games (even if the initial implementation was pretty horrible), helped establish mods and the sound and atmosphere were OK.
However, it was definitely lacking in other areas. The game play wasn't revolutionary, plot was deliberately thin and there was very little progression overall other than the choice of weapons. That's not a criticism - the game did exactly what it promised and at the time I loved it for it. However, to say that it was great in every area is a bit blinkered.

I view Doom with the ire that most people here reserve for shit like Halo. And I can say that openly since Deth isn't around to scold me. :D

Doom was, and still is, the best straight up shooter ever made.

Respectfully, I disagree with you, Jason (am I doing this smack talk right?).
What's the reason for your ire? Is it that you think the game is flawed or that it's held in too high esteem?

Personally, I'm not too fond of Doom either- mostly because it set a trend towards mindless KILLEMALL games bereft of story or meaning beyond the visceral feel of violence. It's seen as a great game, but when I play it all I find is a limited assortment of weapons and enemies, mediocre maps, and not even a story to keep me going.
Al_B on 19/5/2010 at 23:23
Are you sure it's the game that set the trend for that? "KILLEMALL" games have been around from about the first time that spacewar was run. Doom was definitely lacking in many areas but what it set out to do it did well.

Yeah, you ever heard of Space Invaders, Berserk, or Asteroids? Hell I could go on. They are all the same principle as DooM.

I don't think it's a bad game per se, I just think it gets more credit than it deserves since it was the game that popularized first person shooters, basically the same way Halo popularized them on consoles. It's a combination of that and never having really gotten into it at the time. I played Wolf3D and Spear of Destiny, but after that I pretty much skipped Doom and went straight for Descent and Hexen.

Taking the into account that it's a readers poll and also from a probably predominately young audience the most surprising placing, I think, is MW2 being higher the MW1. I mean I expect my favourites to rank pretty low down or not at all (Outcast) but I was under the impression that MW2 has a rather luke-warm reception from fans? Certainly it was always going to chart but higher than MW1; one of, if not the game of the decade for a lot younger gamers?
Glad to see Mirror's Edge made it though.
