Are you sure it's the game that set the trend for that?
Oh, I'd never claim that it originated the trend, but any successful game is bound to be copied and Doom was very, very successful and very, very mindless. Consider how unique SS1 was for its time (hell, and still is) from a story standpoint. I imagine that if Doom were a flop and SS1 made millions, we'd see a lot more story-driven or adventure-hybrid FPSes.

id Software did "mindless shooter" with Doom, and they did it very well.
But what do I know, I even think Doom 3 was a good implementation of a mindless shooter.

I'm more disappointed by Quake at #94 than Doom at #41. I think Quake was a bigger step in the FPS genre over Doom then Doom was over Wolf 3D, Ultima Underworld, etc. Quake had true 3D rendering in real time in software and with hardware acceleration, 3D lighting, 3D physics, a scripting language, and internet multiplayer. All were firsts for the genre, most were firsts for the industry. If you judge Quake by the single player game in the box, then yeah, I could see #94. But at the time, buying a copy of Quake was like buying a ticket to a whole new world of gaming.
I'm pleasantly surprised that DX1, SS2, and T2 rate as high as they do in the gamers poll, but I wonder how many respondents have actually played the games. Judging by the number of newcomers in the forums, it's hard to believe their popularity has increased, though it has become trendy for critics to praise these games.

I thought Quake was pretty good just as a singleplayer shooter. And it was the killer app when it came to 3-D acceleration, imho.

However, it was definitely lacking in other areas. The game play wasn't revolutionary, plot was deliberately thin and there was very little progression overall other than the choice of weapons. That's not a criticism - the game did exactly what it promised and at the time I loved it for it. However, to say that it was great in every area is a bit blinkered.
I'd say with deathmatch, the gameplay was revolutionary as well. We take it for granted today, but at that time, hunting your friends in a 3d environment was completely mindblowing. Sure, there was Netwars and even NSnipes for the really old crowd, but they didn't even compared.
Also, you are right that DooM was never as sophisticated as System Shock, but not every game has to be. I love my complex immersive sims as much as anyone on TTLG, but I also like old school shooters for entirely different reasons, much like you can enjoy classical jazz
and hard rock. DooM did violence perfectly.

I view Doom with the ire that most people here reserve for shit like Halo.
I loved Doom (and Doom 2) when it came out, but I kind of understand this pov since System Shock came out soon after and I never got to play it as the guys I used to play games with (on this one guy's machine!) found it to slow/boring and wanted to play Doom all the time.
Although it wasn't the first killemallnownownow game it certainly started the trend for FP games to be FPSs first and foremost. There were a bunch of other FP games out around the same time (albeit with arguably lower tech and so not FP games as we use the term now) that were overlooked by many when they got the chance to wield a chaingun.

5 month old post? Let it go man, let it go.

The mouselook mod was also released a few months after Eva's post. PC Gamer UK do also have a regular monthly article revisiting an old game (original called "long play" - but I think it's called "reloaded" or similar now). I don't remember seeing them featuring SS1 which seems to be a terrible omission.
