What's the difference between percentage and something out of 10?
Thirith on 13/3/2006 at 12:47
It implies scientific precision more than a 10-point system. However, I think that anyone who looks at the percentage/points in a review based on qualitative aspects (instead of empirical/quantitative ones) and believes that they express an absolute truth is an idiot, quite frankly. The write-up is always more important to me than whether a game gets 8.5 points or 87 percent.

Yeah, it's pretty laughable to consider the difference between 93% and 96%, especially when the scoring is pretty arbitrary to begin with.

Edge did away with scores entirely for a while. But they decided to keep x/10 in the end, as it provides a useful immediate handle for people before they delve in depth into the review.
96% is relevant here as it's the PCGUK record score. Nothing's ever got higher and only a couple of games have achieved it. The difference between 93% and 96% is being used to illustrate the difference between it being excellent and it being BEST GAME EVER.

The thing is also: People by and large want scores. It matters to them whether something gets 92% or 94%. Yes, it's sad, but there are always almost flamewars about almost every single big game review on the games mag boards I sometimes frequent.

Wonder if the first patch will be out before the game is released.

Out of curiousity, what game was rated 96%?

Cheers mang, I didn't know that. If the silly AI conversation is the only thing preventing it from being as good as games get in their opinion, I'll be one happy mofo when the game hits the shelves!

Civilisation II and Half-Life 1 & 2, afiak.
And having read that Oblivion review, it's starting to sound awfully tempting, even though my opinion of Morrowind is less than flattering. Those assassin quests sounded *deliciously* evil.
