Exactly my point, Sulphur.
And dethtoll is right, that attitude exists here as does a fairly malign attitude towards purely casual gaming in general. Regardless, I think arguing best game independent of platform is more appropriate given the amount of ports and so on that we have in a given year. Consoles are becoming more like PCs every year and PCs more like complicated consoles.

How are PCs becoming
more like complicated consoles?

I would hazard a guess and say that it's because the tech is becoming more and more standardized, so there are fewer variables with regards to things like video cards and whatnot. This allows developers to make conscious decisions in what they'll push for, performance-wise. A good developer can make their game scalable so that people with varying hardware configurations can enjoy it, though obviously as time marches on people on the low end are going to be falling off and there's the inevitable complaining about it.

BING BLANG BLAOW
The lines are blurring as far as I see it, but I'm fully prepared to have a debate about it.
I've been grumbling for a long time that the advances in PC gaming tech were coming at an expense of damn near everything else (affordability of systems, story, art design, originality) and that sooner or later we need to settle down on a great platform of established tech and hammer out great games on solid engines.
This is effectively what consoles do, and as consoles prove with each year as more sophisticated titles emerge (comparatively to previous console titles) and arguably release more original/unique titles than on PCs (some of which are later ported to PC), the divide between great new games with challenging content on either platform is narrowing.
The closest I come to finding a parallel in the world of PC gaming is Valve. Same publisher, same developer, same engine, original content that is among the most successful of all time.
I find this to be no coincidence. For all intents and purposes, Valve treat the PC like most developers treat a console.

Because he worded it in such a way
I was clearly talking about what was relevant to me. I don't think I really needed to state it more explicitly.

and there seems to be this prevailing attitude here, that consoles are irrelevant, period.
I've always thought that TTLG is remarkably platform-agnostic on the whole. There's always going to be PC vs console rivalry, and you can guarantee that you'll find die-hard PC game fans on the fan website for Looking Glass games, but the average GenGamer seems fairly accepting of the console scene to me.
Admittedly I say that as someone who much prefers PC gaming, and maybe it looks different to people who prefer consoles, but suggesting that people think "consoles are irrelevant" is ludicrous.

Or maybe I've been on this goddamn forum too long.
You might like to think twice about knee-jerk reactions, at the very least.

As someone who loves PC gaming but is very accepting of consoles and the like I have to say I find the balance here set against consoles more than you have found it, Shadowcat.

Whilst this forum is definitely (thankfully) almost entirely free of retarded console wars debates, I definitely think that there is a generally dismissive approach towards console gaming around here. Definitely agree with Scots that the lines are beginning to blur, especially with so damn few platform exclusive games now.
june gloom on 5/1/2010 at 21:27
What the others said. There's definitely more of a brandy-sipping anti-console attitude than Shadowcat thinks, and therefore my reaction was perfectly valid.
Scots Taffer on 6/1/2010 at 01:53
I would also agree because I once too used the term "consoltitis" here.

And the biggest problem is that while most of us console-centric people at least have access to the best PC games (maybe without the graphical bells and whistles) it seems to me that many of the best console games slip past their most vocal critics.
Basically what I'm saying is that Uncharted 2 is the game of the year. SORRY
