Now I know I dont spend as much time on the ol' PC gaming rig I lovingly built a couple of years ago as I'd like but it seems to me that the state of PC gaming is such that there is a total dearth of good games on the horizon for this year.
Off the top of my head I can name perhaps 5 upcoming games which I'm looking forward to, being:
Modern Warfare 2
Alan Wake (where is this??)
Ok shit so i can only name 2.
To contradict myself, I do realise that the start of the year has seen some good ones such as RA3, Fallout3 and DOW2 but honestly - can you help me out here with whats new on the horizon?

You left out DNF in the 'Armageddon' section, champ. ;)
There's also Mafia II, Bioshock 2, Bionic Commando, Supreme Commander II, Starcraft II, Max Payne 3, Prey II, and a whole bunch of other stuff that may or may not register on your hype meter. Here, have an even bigger (
http://pc.ign.com/index/release.html) list of upcoming stuff for your delectation.
I'm looking forward to Raven's Singularity which doesn't have a release date yet, but sounds like the breath of fresh air that games featuring Time-Bendy Powers of Doom™ need.
Which is to say, there seems to be some actual, (
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/955/955556p1.html) honest-to-goodness innovation going on. From Raven. Who'd'a thunk!?

I'm still working on FO3 and I refuse to buy the DLC until it gets patched and preferably comes in a box.
I have Stalker: Clear Sky to start, and I also need to play through Witcher EE. I'm looking forward to CoDMW2, Batman AA, HL2 E3 (and they are rumoured to be working on a full-fledged Counter-Strike 2, which may breathe some new life into that series), Max Payne 3, and yes Bioshock 2, 'cuz I haven't learned my lesson from the first one (and neither, I suspect, has Irrational.)

Almost all of the games listed in this thread have been or will be released on consoles as well. It seems that PC gaming has become more of a format choice rather than a place to find smarter, deeper games. There are exceptions of course, but they do seem to be getting more scarce.

I'd simply attribute that to the fact that the deeper, smarter games that did really well headed over to the consoles too. :p
With the typical budget for a AAA title these days shooting up to gazillions of dollars, developers would be better off trying to recoup those costs by making that title accessible to as many people as possible - hence the simultaneous, aggressively multiplatform releases we've got today.
But you already know all of this. To be honest, I think it's been a long while since the PC has seen commercial titles that have been truly deeper or smarter.
Most of the revolutionary, off the wall ideas come from Indie devs these days, and they're not limited to the PC either now with the Wii, PSN, and Xbox Live Arcade as potential platforms to publish their games on.
