Contrary to apparently popular believe there is more to gaming than violence.

Im not actually sure what defines Gameplay anyway kind of like viewing art in trying to define it. Skills, items, stats and equipment define it for me. I don't know if a game needs to have a good story to have good gameplay but it should have good graphics. Its virtual nirvahna to me if its good.

They're planning a commerical game trilogy based on this.

The first demo was made for a Swedish game competition. This competition did not go very well, and we decided to stop working on the project. We just put it up on a few sites on the Internet and started working on other ideas. However, after a few days the game started spreading and there was a flood of downloads, actually so much that the school server we hosted the game on crashed. This made us realize that people actually liked the game, and we decided to continue working on it.
And I
definitely like the sound of this technology in a moody horror game:

Unlike other games where you simply click on doors, drawers, and levers to move them, in Penumbra: Overture you must use mouse movements to accomplish things. It might not sound like it makes that big a difference, but it really adds to the mood and gameplay. As an example, you can use this system to just slightly open a door and peek inside the room. This is something that is not present in any current game that I know of.
Nice!
I really must try out the freeware version...

Well it worked for me. In the very first room when I was learning to manipulate the environment, figuring out that I had to actually swing open the lockers at a speed I control gave me this really uneasy feeling. In a good way. Often we can just hit the action button and backpedal away while the door opens by itself. Here it adds quite a bit of tension by having you open it manually. I hope we'll be seeing it put to more use in the future.

Neat looking game but it locks up my whole computer about every two minutes. No escape either. I have to pull the plug out of the wall to restart.

This is fantastic. It's 1:30am and this game has convinced me that I cannot part with my CRT monitor just yet - the black is pitch and the tiny patches of light at the ends of corridors create a feeling of unease that Doom 3 struggled with in comparison.
I don't know if my graphics card is incompatible or not, but the whole game is washed in a kind of lo-fi, 8-bit fuzz; up close, the textures look almost like they do in Thief 1. Glitch or not, it gives the game a very creepy feeling. See for yourself:

http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/4462/penumbrafb0.th.jpgThe physics are great, especially environment interaction - slowly pushing open a door is unnerving as anything, and having a dead flashlight (being forced to use the glowstick) only adds to the tension. I don't know how you can say this game has not atmosphere, Scots... I've been playing for 20 minutes and I feel worn out.
It definitely doesn't feel professional, but it's beyond most anything else I've seen. There's definite potential here. With a little polish, I'd even buy it.

I've downloaded the demo and have tried to play it but all I get is a black screen for several seconds and then a window pops up with the following:
PenumbraDemo.exe caused an EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION in module PenumbraDemo.exe at 001B:0051E385
Does anyone know what this means? I have an ASUS N6600GT videocard (similar to the NVidia one).
I've now installed the 1.1 patch and it says: 'Newton.dll not found...'
Rogue Keeper on 28/3/2007 at 13:35
That's odd Tintin, I played Penumbra on 6600GT before without a problem.
Perhaps it's an issue related to particular driver version ?
Physics and shadows just rock. Many professional games could take an example from this thing.
Tintin on 28/3/2007 at 13:37
Bugger. I just wish I could play it! I love the Thief games and this looks to be a game in a similar vein, although leaning more towards atmospheric horror than steampunk fantasy.
Thanks anyway.

Okay, I've got it working. I like the interactivity (but I've only just left the boat). One thing that annoys me is some of the bright lighting (it's very distracting and hard to make some things out). I'm in the snow blizzard and I'm trying to open the airlock? I've broken the ice of it, but I don't know what to do next.
Any help?
Thanks!
