BlackCapedetc is playing the original demo, which takes place in a different setting.

Are you sure you're playing the Penumbra Overture demo?
No, I'm not sure.
The one I played shows me a movie, and then I begin in a room with lockers.
I'll have another look around. See if I can find it. ;)

The one with the flying monsters is the old one.
The one where you start on a boat is (
http://www.penumbra-overture.com/demo.php) the new one.
Just downloaded and played the new one, it has less in the way of things to do and length but a much more engaging narrative. Only 20 bucks for the full version and - according to the website - if should be out in stores worldwide.

still, is there a reason the keypad doesn't work? Was that as far as the old demo was supposed to go?

You should defenitely be able to get out of the first room. Don't remember the room to clearly but I didn't have any trouble with the keypad. Just clicked on it with the left mouse button and entered the code, if I remember correctly.

The first episode is FANTASTIC. Creepy, excellent puzzles and decent amount of stealth.
I think the best comparison gameplay and atmosphere wise would be the lowest level of Arх Fatalis. Every fan of Thief also should be pleased, by quality of gameplay it's comparable with best FMs out there.

Likely waaaay too late, and not sure if the problem is present in the new version but:

Colour banding problem
I'm assuming you have an ATI card, because I had exactly the same problem. Somewhere on the developer's forums I managed to turn up a solution offered to someone with the same problem - disable the catalyst AI feature completely. It should be available in the catalyst control panel somewhere. If you didn't install the bloated piece of c-c-crap that is the CCC then I heartily recommend installing (
http://www.guru3d.com/article/atitraytools/189/) ATI Tray Tools to disable the feature - very lightweight, and the different settings profiles for different games feature works extremely well.
If you don't have an ATI card, well, I've just totally wasted my time. haven't heard of this particular problem in this particular game on Nvidia though.

I have an ATI. I played the demo yesterday, and I also had the colour problem, but I don't want to get rid of it. Honestly, it looks like they put it there on purpose, and it makes the game strange and creepy. If it looked like normal graphics I'm not sure I would like it half as much. At any rate, I think some company should put it in their game on purpose because it's pretty awesome.

It's just not 'a problem' :) It's like colours should be and like they are in RL.
F.e. If compared with Doom3, the latter uses cartoony oversaturated colours, not realistic at all. The same concerns FarCry - cartoony thing.
Few games with more or less realistic colours are Dark Messiah of M&M, Silent Hill 2, Half Life 2.
