Great! I was in the perfect mood for an atmospheric horror game like Penumbra, so I installed it, run it, worked fine. At least I could see the intro and the main menu. Then I did, what I always do first, when I fire up a new game. I switched the graphics option to 1600x1280 and enabled EAX. It prompted me to restart the game so I did. Black screen and nothing else. I couldn't even quit, so I had to reset my machine. Tried it again. Same happened. Uninstalled it, reinstalled it again. This time it didn't even come up with the default 800x600, instead it started with, you guessed it, a black screen. Apparently it doesn't uninstall properly and remembered my last changes, so I don't see a chance to play it. :(
Maybe somebody knows what's the issue. I have W2000 and an ATI9800XT, Soundblaster Audigy ZS2. Don't know what triggered this nasty repsonse, but I sure don't know what to do.

Turning EAX on did that exact thing for me - the only solution was to delete everything under My Documents\Penumbra Overture\, reinstall and not turn EAX on.

It's just not 'a problem' :) It's like colours should be and like they are in RL.
F.e. If compared with Doom3, the latter uses cartoony oversaturated colours, not realistic at all. The same concerns FarCry - cartoony thing.
Few games with more or less realistic colours are Dark Messiah of M&M, Silent Hill 2, Half Life 2.
While I agree on your assessment of Doom3 and Far Cry's colours (though it's arguably a stylistic choice in Far Cry, try the "cold" visual filter and it looks a lot better) I totally disagree. Dunno about you, but I see RL in more than 8 bits.

How do you turn the air-lock wheel in the blizzard (towards the beginning?)
I hold down (R) interact and strafe with the mouse. It turns a bit but never actually swings open. Am I doing something wrong?
Help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You strafe with the mouse?
Are you sure about that? :weird:
Just make a circle while holding your mouse button down. If it doesn't work, try the other way around.
Tintin on 9/4/2007 at 13:48
Uh yeah, sorry about that. I meant 'circle' not 'strafe'. I don't even enjoy many FPS. I'll give it another go. Thanks

Thanks! I'm going to try that.

When manipulating things in penumbra, your perspective to the object means a lot. Trying to turn the hatch wheel is a little tricky since it on the ground and you are probably looking at it from an angle. Try looking more or less straight down on to it (dont stand on it). Grab the wheel portion anywhere and move the mouse slowly making sure that you are moving your mouse tangent to to the hands current position the wheel. This hatch I believe unlocks clockwise for some reason, but maybe not. Also, I am assuming that you have already broken the ice off of the wheel. After it stops turning (1/2 turn or so) then let go and grab the edge of the of the hatch and lift it up. The hatch is too heavy to try to lift from the middle, or worse, from the hinge side.
Now to why I came to post. I bought the game. I like to so far (in spider caves) but I do have one major gripe. The gimmicky combat mousing just needs work. I have purposely not switched to "simpleWeaponSwing" so that I could get used to it but its just boink. The problem is largely due to the fact that it forces you to swing at the center of the screen. Thus you cannot make any correction after you click to start your backswing. It would have been much better if weapons remain in "grab mode" while swinging. Then if your target moves up or down while your backswinging you could correct and swing the mouse forward with a higher/lower arc. Its really a shame. Manipulating object is really satisfying but when you swing a weapon you feel like your arm is on rails.

Okay, I went back and tried the demo again, after the millionth time straining at the wheel hatch I turned it and went inside. Who was the wise guy that programmed a simple act like that to be so damn frustrating?
Also the hammer action etc. has little to be desired. I think a simple hold and release the mouse button would be a whole lot better.
I love the atmosphere and creativity of it all (very much like The Thing or some Lovecraftian style adventure), it's just these few major gripes that annoy me.
I was thinking of buying the game but if it's just as frustrating in the full game, I don't know if I'll bother.
Great atmosphere and good story and game-play are all well and good, but when backed up with some terrible controls, it just doesn't make the mark.

I love the mouse controls, it's one of the great things about this game as far as I'm concerned. I really feel like I'm whacking something when I do it although I would like some kind of damage increase for faster mouse movement for combat.
