Okay, I went back and tried the demo again, after the millionth time straining at the wheel hatch I turned it and went inside. Who was the wise guy that programmed a simple act like that to be so damn frustrating?
It must be frustrating for audience Bioshock and TDS were mutilated for ;) The action is properly described and there are two modes to manipulate things. I think interaction system is innovative and overall great in this game.

Also the hammer action etc. has little to be desired. I think a simple hold and release the mouse button would be a whole lot better.
I love the atmosphere and creativity of it all (very much like The Thing or some Lovecraftian style adventure), it's just these few major gripes that annoy me.
I was thinking of buying the game but if it's just as frustrating in the full game, I don't know if I'll bother.
Great atmosphere and good story and game-play are all well and good, but when backed up with some terrible controls, it just doesn't make the mark.
You can turn simple weapon swings on by editing an ini file, I can't remember which one (it might be in My Documents too, not in the game directory). The combat still sucks but at least it's tolerable after that. Otherwise a stellar game, easily the genuinely scariest game I've ever played.

That's a funny thing to be hearing, particularly because the controls ENHANCE the suspenseful atmosphere.
With proper documentation, there's no reason why controls must adhere to a standard. And yet, I hear complaints every time a game breaks from that unnecessary constraint. People are conditioned to think games "ought to" control a certain way. Yes, you must accustom yourself to a new approach, it's what opens the door to new experiences. I struggled with gothic's control scheme, I struggled with Penumbra's control scheme, and in both cases I enjoyed the game all the more for it.
People complain about a lack of innovation, and yet when innovation beckons, all of a sudden everyone's too conservative to answer. Blanket words like "good" and "terrible" are used to describe what is different, but otherwise a commendable attempt at this thing called "new". Cus dude, new things are SUPPOSE to be different.

Hello Penumbra thread.:cheeky: Cool, someone posted about this - did you guys know that this game (well, the full version penumbra overture)
has been out for a while? There are also forums too, and a second one (black plague) will be released this year (no longer a trilogy though, turns out, only two episodes now) I actually haev an account on there, and you guys may want to sign up there and discuss the game more.. my account on there is "Abysmal";)

Above shows the games they have developed, click on the overture one to check out the official website. I own the game, and I must tell you, it is a good game. Not perfect, and they know that... the next version has basically rid the unreliable combat system since the game is meant to be more horrific (that helpless feeling kinda thing) and there will be more than three kinds of monsters in it!:)
I stumbled upon this thread searching for doom 3 threads.. heh

February...What? I heard it wasn't to be released until march or april or somewhere around there. Unless they pushed it back (or forward? how would that work) to release earlier.... Where'd you see that, just curious.

Oh, sorry...
Hey thanks for link, wow.... They DID change it. Guess they were closer to release than they originally thought.

I love Penumbra :D One of my favorite games in 2007. The atmosphere is just perfect... Too bad it's pretty short.
I think Black Plague has a chance of being one of the scariest games since TDP, especially if Philip doesn't get any weapons. :thumb:

Penumbra complete collection is now on Steam.
(
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/1451/)
$20 USD cheaper than Gamersgate.
Black Plague Gold (incld. Requiem) had been on there for a couple months already, but they only just added Overture.
EDIT: Sorry, it's $20 USD cheaper, not $10.
