Alright. .. so I suppose that a game I paid 10 bucks for as a pre-order isn't something I should assume will dazzle me. But what the hell is this?
Its like. .. survival horror version of Portal... except you only get the portal when you're done the puzzle.
There was no continuity from the previous episodes except for the Voice Narration .. and even that wasn't terribly understandable. I was kind of excited at first because Dr. Eminess was talking to me and I thought awesome I"ve found the villian and I'm going to be playing cat and mouse with him the whole game. But hafl way through he just.. stopped being around to talk to me... and then out of nowhere Red reappears.. who is supposed to be dead. And while I understand that the whole episode is some sort of mind game it never really explained what the hell is going on or where Red came from. All I really got in the end was that phillip went crazy,, whether or not it was the turngait, or red, or clarence or just... himself cracking under the pressure.. Maybe I'm too dense to understand what happened. I'd like to play through it again but it was such an arduous task that I dont really want to, it felt more like a map pack of random puzzles than an expansion. let alone any kind of continuation of the game.
Your inventory screen is never filled. and you never take any unique items into it. just painkillers, and flares and your usual flashlight and glowstick. And Phillip never even uses his notebook. he just jots down "two more keys to go, one more key to go, get to the portal to end the level".
I'm very disappointed. I jumped on the penumbra forums after i beat it and people were complaining and others were trying to vindicate frictional by saying it was the community that hyped the game up and not the publisher.
I didn't even start playing Overture until about 3 weeks ago. as soon as it was done I bought Black Plague and was equally delighted and I couldn't wait to play requiem. I didn't get any of the hype, just what I made myself.
The game is not suspenseful... because there are zero encounters in the entire game. no wolves, no worms and no infected. It alludes to somebody being there around level 8... (there is 9 levels) and sometimes you hear footsteps, but nobody is ever there.. you dont hide, you dont fight.. you just solve puzzles, collect the keys and go to the "end of level button" ... its like wolf3d w/o guns and a heroin laced injection of myst.
Overture totally kicked my ass.. as the saying goes. and black plague wasn't quite as good but it wasn't even close to bad.
They better friggen make a Penumbra 2 and let you play the guy that phillip contacted at the end of black plague. because as far as I can tell. Requiem was all about Phillip going crazy and just... dying. While he was sitting there typing on the computer to tell his friend to come kill them all.
Am I being harsh? Discuss.

Are you being harsh? NO. I am PISSED. What a crapfest this game trned out to be. The first two were SO much better. Oh well, at least it was relatively inexpensive.

Well.. I suppose...
I paid 4.99 for a brand new retail box of Overture though....

I wonder if they left the encounters out (the best part of the first game, IMO), and all of the hide-and-seek gameplay w/the monsters because so many Adventure Game fans bitched about it being too 'action-y' and difficult as a result. :erg:

I guess they just decided to focus purely on puzzles this time, that's all. And it's not the third game, it's a little add-on.

I've played only the first 3 levels of the game and based on the interviews with the makers I can't say I'm surprised. "A more abstract, characterdriven gameplay with a strong emphasis on physics puzzles" was basically what they said.
Yeah, It's been pretty shitty compared to overture and BP so far. Actually they're not even comparable...
Volitions Advocate on 9/9/2008 at 13:11
They really aren't comparable.
And I dont get the idea that its character driven, because there is no character interaction. What makes me mad about it is that Its supposed to be all puzzle driven but they choose to continue the story somehow while you're doing these puzzles. Its like playing a puzzle game while reading the story. the 2 sides never intersect. And now im all confused about the story.

What exactly confused you in Requiem?
Volitions Advocate on 14/9/2008 at 06:58
well.. for starters. what exactly it is that happened.
did thomas just... die sitting at the computer? or did he die after travelling around in his own brain for awhile, and if thats the case why did it happen? What was Eminess going to do about the fact that you shared the location of the tuurngait. Why the hell is Eloff Carpenter suddenly so important to the story, and why is it he thinks you're in his head. or alternatively.. why are you in his head? Where did the portals come from, where did all the crazy advanced technology come from?
Personally I dont think I"m daft. but I must be if any of this actually makes sense in the game, because I missed all the connections.

He was killed by infected (what was left of true him) just after he sent the message because he gave away Tuurngait. It becomes obvious when you see his body in the end and recollecting what you heard in the very beginning. I think all the Requiem is adventure of Tuurngait controlled part of Philip's mind. Does it happen before his death or after is irrelevant. Quote:

Nothing. It as well as 'Eloff' were controlled by Tuurngait minds. Physical bodies of both were already killed. Quote:

See above, their minds both became parts of Tuurnagait.

See above too, they actually don't physically exist. It's a Tuurngait's game.
