This is not the first game where I am forced to radically change my playstyle for a boss fight.
What are some of the others? When I saw this thread I immediately thought of DXHR, but can't quite think of any others.

Just stun him with the taser
That right there works for every boss fight. Seriously, all you need to do is save your taser ammo (and there's no reason to ever use it outside of boss fights since you can just use takedowns when you're in stun gun range) and then hit each boss like 15 times or something and that's it.

I might try a non-lethal run through of Dark Souls for my second go.

Yeah I wish I had known about this flaw in the game. Perhaps we can list some others here as a warning.
Witcher 2 as was mentioned above was just as aggravating for me.
Mass effect 3 to a certain extent where the bosses are immune to your favorite powers which force you to change your style.
Aliens vs Predator 2010 as a marine. Particularly the final battles in the Pyramid
Personally, I suck at twitch based QTE/shooter style game play, so these were a bigger deal for me than it might be for others

Not a drastic change, but jarring and horrible nonetheless...the helicopter-on-the-roof-of-The-Shop boss. I just went through that yesterday and about snapped my discs in half.

I suppose Mirror's edge could count, given that every single encounter was easily resolved by simply "running the fuck away" up until they stuck you on a crate and forced you to ragemangle your way through a hand-to-hand fight.
Big ol' witch/demon woman at the end of Deadly Shadows?
Hell, I'd say boss fights are more often bad than good, really. I'm playing Dragon Age 2 at the moment and thus far every fight with an actual dragon has resulted in my team-mates dying because fuck micromanagement, followed by me casting AoE DoT spells and then running in little benny-hill circles as the dragon waddles after me within the damage radius. Can't see that one fulfilling a "dramatic narrative" anytime soon.

I for one like boss fights that force you to get fancy (when done right, of course -- DXHR not being in that category.) Teaches you to not get complacent. A boss that doesn't do that is just a hole for you to dump ammo/magic/whatever into that takes longer than the other enemies you kill. That's not really very interesting.

Forcing you to do a bunch of special stuff is what a boss fight should be all about, yes.
I don't mind a new mechanic being introduced or current mechanics having to be used in a different way if its done well. Dead Space 1 did a good as far as I remember (and as far as I got into it. I have to restart it now).
