I have no doubt (1) Mario gets a tanuki suit because most Japanese actually think that's all tanuki are good for, as fish & whales are only good for eating (I visited an aquarium with a Japanese and their only comments were incessantly asking us how we think this or that fish tasted), and (2) most Westerners don't know what the fuck. So this is completely missing its mark to a Western audience, but I suspect it was made for a Japanese audience to begin with and they just translated it because why not.
