Frankly that doesn't even surprise me - isn't there (historically) a strong correlation between great artists or geniuses and various forms of mental disorders, often related specifically to social issues (aspergers, histronic, etc) ? Unless it's just Fish's subversive grab for attention (he could just delete his twitter...)
In my personal anecdotal experience I noticed that too - lots of the "smart" kids at schools tend to be a bit... weird. I actually used to be a colossal "social retard" myself while a straight-A student myself up until halfway through college as well, but a company of good close friends plus the increasing my party attendance have luckily caught me up to speed :p

I reckon there's more of a strong correlation between looking for this kind thing and using it as an explanation for why someone is 'special'. There's way too many quite ordinary seeming people who did quite remarkable work over their lifetime.
The crazy ones are just more interesting.
Attention does seem to be Phil's big stimulant. He just needs to get a private life and maybe a nice old fashioned drinking problem instead.

I mostly did a lot of coke and everyone expected me to fail.

I'd love to see someone like Phil Fish actually sit down and try to recreate, say, River Raid, using the tools available at the time. 5 years minimum, I'd imagine, and he'd have a massive headstart since the overall design would be done for him already.
Now there's a good idea for a kickstart project, as long as someone else made it.

Whoa this thread exploded....
I never said it would be political but that it might be seen as perpetuating a very certain black stereotype because of the nature of the given character, and our setting/design perfectly explained a homogeneous cast. I did not want to reveal any more spoilers. Frankly, if I came off as "coy" it's because
I dont have to justify myself to you. Not in a "har har my game is AHT" but in SubjEff's "don't pre-emotively assume people are racist" way. I stated the design worked and the setting + references justified a homogeneous cast. Why does it matter if I explicitly say what the setting is or not? Can't you take my word for it? I've posted here long enough.
* And if you want to get really anal
I linked to my devblog which tells you of the North Irish Troubles inspiration within the first two sentences.Yeah, but the point of all this when people pre-emptively assume racism is because throwing about accusations of racism allows them to destruct the entire conversation pre-emptively, before they have to actually discuss the topic at hand. In other words it's a trick that people who have no real power to "win" an argument by throwing a hate grenade into the conversation....it's trick typical of America's left and right wing extremists that has, unfortunately, spread from political discussions and is now used to fag up talk about every aspect of life.
While of course there's always an element of truth because these issues will always exist, I for one get tired of how game writers feel the need to appease these people by inserting arbitrary "PC" characters, plot aspects, and lectures into the games. For example the whole "elves are native americans" aspect of Dragon Age was hella forced. Not surprisingly it took a non-american company (CDProjekt) to create a portrayal of these issues that actually did provoke some thought and challenge the player's values.

Right, because I'm not capable of my own opinions so I have to get them from other people.
You do far more than you realize, but that's also true of most people.
Good minor example is how my fiance's little sister used to think Les Miserables was the best movie ever made, but I found it interesting that she began thinking that when the movie was the "cool" thing for drama kids to love, and she stopped thinking that almost the instant it wasn't the "cool" thing anymore.
What most people don't realize is that you don't HAVE to be parroting someone else for an attitude to be not your own. Nobody told her it was the best movie ever, and nobody told my college friends that Halo and then COD were "the best video games ever made". The fact of the matter is that we subconsciously assimilate a lot more information than we think we do, and the attitudes that we're exposed too tend to rub off on us. In dethtoll's case, without knowing anything about his background my guess would be that he's spent some time studying in art, journalism, or a field related to those two because he thinks almost exactly the same way as most other people I've known in those fields. Same can be said for a lot of other members on this forum and most people you encounter in life. In my life I rarely even have to ask who other bikers or vets are because they've assimilated the attitudes, behaviors, and even body language of those groups.

You know what would be great? If people would just fucking drop the whole thing. I refuse to apologize for the assumptions I made because of Yakoob not being clear, I don't appreciate the fucking dogpile I got over it, and I really, really don't appreciate an absolute shithammer like you bringing it back up, what, 2, 3 weeks later so you can fucking insult me with your complete misunderstanding of why there was even a fight in the first place. Punch yourself in the fucking face.
SubJeff on 18/8/2013 at 08:27
You say Yakoob wasn't clear. And in some ways he wasn't.
But the fact is you made a statement on the assumption of something (that an ethnic variation is needed) without knowing anything about the game.
I don't really care, but it's probably in your best interests to learn to admit fault, even a little bit.

CCCToad, next time put a Trigger warning up front.

Here's what would have happened if he'd just fucking come out and been more clear.
"The smart thing to do would've been to make a number of the cast non-white, not just one "token" character."
"Actually it wouldn't have fit because it's a white European setting."
"Oh, well okay then!"
SEE? NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED. Instead I got a vague "it wouldn't have worked and also it'd be political and that's bad!" and a bunch of bad-faith assumptions.
Without context I'm automatically going to assume it's a modern or semi-modern setting where POCs wouldn't be out of place, or even a vaguely fantastical Victorian setting, based on the screenshots. The assumption wasn't in bad faith, but Yakoob's comments in reply absolutely were, as was your involvement. I don't like being treated as some kind of raving left-wing loony (actually, it was mostly you doing this, Subjeff, of fucking
course) just for that. Your comment about Fez (about where I stopped talking to you last time) is fucking insulting and blinkered and showed a complete lack of understanding of the point I was trying to make.
I'm formally and publicly requesting that Al_B ban everyone who brings this shit up again.
