Back on topic a bit - I'd say if Phil Fish is getting anything close to the (
http://gamerfury.tumblr.com/) "feedback" that CoD dev David Vonderhaar is getting for one of his recent patches, I'm all for giving him a big, giant pass. It's freaking disgusting that people would tweet this stuff, anonymous or not, and it sickens me a bit to be lumped in with them as gamers. If there's anyway to do it, these losers should be prosecuted - if you typed a letter to someone with the same text, you surely would be.

Oh, I don't know. I think there's a legitimate issue here. What does someone think about race when they're "not thinking about race"? Is it all white? Is that acceptable? Should media be held responsible for creating or changing that default?
I don't feel strongly about these questions. I suppose I'm lucky I don't have to. But I can easily imagine people arguing that the answers are "the default is all white, that's not acceptable, media has created this situation, and should be responsible for changing it: perpetuating the all-white normal is not a harmless or neutral position".
You should think about it when it's appropriate. Do you consider race when you're making a film about a historical event that only involved white men?
We're making a film about Ernest Shackleton's expeditions. SHOULD WE THINK ABOUT PUTTING A BLACK GUY IN IT? Shut up with your PC nonsense.

I think in Aliens, they should have had an alien playing one of the marines. Otherwise the whole thing appears a bit xenophobic.

Pretty much that. Post-mortem is, after you play it, obviously influenced by The Troubles in Ireland. Appropriate ethnic representation is increasingly more important these days, but given the subject matter for the game, I think you can excuse Yakoob's apparent oversight and drop the topic. As much as dethtoll loves to foam at the mouth at perceived inequalities in various forms of media, poking random things with a stick without first evaluating if they needed prodding is misguided at best and unthinking, reactionary kneejerking at worst.

How the fuck was I supposed to know? Yakoob refused to actually answer my questions and instead gave me copouts about how "putting in black people is being political" with zero context or explanation why. Take by itself his comments are very much emblematic of a known problem in game development re: portrayals of non-whites. If he had just stopped being fucking coy about it and said "it's essentially a white European setting" this wouldn't even have fucking happened.
Jesus Christ you guys, I'm not half as much the kneejerk liberal hooplehead you're making me out to be. Fuck, I'm ashamed of you all.
Also, I love the phrase "perceived inequalities" because it implies that there are no inequalities and everything is just hunkydory as is. That's good, that's real good, very red state.

Have you played his game?
I don't even understand why the issue of race would come up. If you've played his game you'd know why it wouldn't. If you haven't played his game you're just bringing race up for what reason exactly? Is this a standard question of any game?
Hey, I'm making a game with an interesting space minin YEAH BUT IS THERE A BLACK LESBIAN IN IT?It's fine looking at a game set in 90s New York and asking where the minorities are.
You jumped in with
Quote:
The smart thing to do would've been to make a number of the cast non-white, not just one "token" character.
which is the equivalent of the black lesbian space miner.

That was in response to this, you
colossal motherfucker:

Interestingly, this issue came up developing our game, as one of our artists really wanted more diversity since we realized our whole cast was white. He wanted to make one character of different race.
I opposed.
Why? We already cover so many themes and motifs, I did not want to bring race into the mix, it was not what the game is about. Secondly, I was fearing it would end up being taken the wrong way seemingly perpetuating some arbitrary stereotype (i.e. "why is the only black character in the game the one that does/believes x?") And lastly, it frankly made sense from a narrative-standpoint that they would all be the same race (or close). And I did not want to have the "token minority" just for the sake of having one so we can be PC.
As you notice, he does not give any details about the game, instead giving vague justifications ("made sense from a narrative standpoint" could mean any number of things).
I am not posting in a fucking vacuum. Stop reading my posts in a fucking vacuum.

I know what you were posting in response to. The artist was wrong to suggest that, you (without knowing anything about the game), parroted what he had suggested.
june gloom on 31/7/2013 at 22:47
Right, because I'm not capable of my own opinions so I have to get them from other people. Was the artist wrong in his suggestion? Maybe, I dunno. Was what I said entirely in response to the vague justifications for not including a POC character? Absolutely.
You can stop posting now, thanks.

But Yakoob explained perfectly well why he said no. You should have played the game before commenting.
