I had a little Hoffman marathon the other day (cos I'm overly nostalgic and a movie buff) which ended up driving home how great an actor he really was. The man's characters were always complex and nuanced to the point that I can understand him indulging in some substance abuse to escape having to be in that mindset constantly.
A point which I feel is further conveyed by the melancholy captured in this photo of him:

Yeah, someone even gave it to me on DVD. I watch it every once in a while. My favourite part is when they make fun of the "Peg" guitar solos that didn't make the cut.
