Phoenix... - by Fafhrd

The one in Arizona. The asshole of these United States. I found out yesterday that I'm going to have to move there, or be out of a job in July. After spending all day today thinking about it, I've decided that's not much of a choice, really, so yeah, I'm going to be moving in July (for at least a year, and then hopefully I'll be able to use the experience in the higher position that I'm likely to bumped into when I'm out there to better get a job back in Southern California).
Any other TTLGers live there/are planning to move there (I know at one point Stitch had a girlfriend somewhere in Arizona, and he was tweeting about moving to a sunshine state only a week or so ago)? Anybody know the best bar to get an Old Fashioned at? Or where the good bands play (I know about The Trunk Space, which may well become my de facto hangout, but if there's a good jazz place anywhere I would be much obliged if anyone told me where it was)? As it is I'll probably end up making the drive back to L.A. every second or third weekend just to keep myself sane.

My friend said her time living in Phoenix was the most traumatic time in her life, not least because of the bleak barrenness of desert and culture. But her domestic turmoil contributed too, so maybe your experience won't necessarily be as bleak as her's.
I bet early morning hiking around desert mesas might be a spiritual experience. And the Mexican food is probably great. You may as well try to tap into some positive things while you're there.

My father-in-law lives in Tempe and my wife and I went to visit for thanksgiving once. I can honestly say that you should jump off a building straight away and save your self the agony. At least you won't be too far from the Grand Canyon and can at least jump from there if you can't find a suitable building or bridge. The one thing that I can say is that there is always hanging out around the Arizona State University campus near Tempe to watch the scenery stroll by. Plus the food is decent if you like cactus in everything.

Sounds like I'll be murdering the shit out of my car with mileage. That'll be awesome.

I live in my hometown of Flagstaff, but I can't stand The Valley, so there's no chance of a run-in.
I lived in Scottsdale, Glendale, Tempe, and Mesa consecutively for 13 months starting in September 1989, with record 122-degree summer heat, and painful cold in the winter, scraping ice off the windshield and hearing slush tumbling through the coolant system. Keep your vehicle's blower motor and air conditioner at peak performance, shade the seats, steering wheel, belt buckle, shifter, interiors of the doors, and dashboard at all hours the sun is up, gallons of water (the water is godawful, and last I heard, contaimnated in areas, with people routinely filling up at water vending machines). If you have pets, be mindful of their paws on the hot ground, and both pets and children and people who cannot take care of themselves routinely die left in hot cars there. There are arts centers and a lot of music, but you have to be vigilant for what you want to see and hear, and depending on your relative location, may have to drive for an hour.

My only advice: Don't try to make love to the cacti.
